The show's spirited opening number celebrated the 40th anniversary of The Wiz, one of the first large-scale, big-budget Broadway musicals to feature an all-black cast and winner of seven Tony Awards in 1975. Alan Cumming and the cast of Cabaret are kicking off the six weeks of fundraising that will lead up to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS's 26th Annual Gypsy of the Year Competition on Monday, December 8 and Tuesday, December 9 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The event, produced by and benefiting Broadway Cares, is the culminating chapter of fall fundraising efforts by Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies.
