BWW Review: WATER BY THE SPOONFUL at New City Players
by David McKibbin - May 4, 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us some valuable lessons about life. When we are isolated, there will always be someone to turn to as our family in times of hardship, even if they are not blood relatives. Moreover, the people who hurt us in the past can still be there to help us heal. While Quiara Alegria Hudes' play Water by the Spoonful is set in 2009, its themes pertaining to addiction, loss, and developing interpersonal bonds still ring true in 2022. New City Players took on the challenge of staging Hudes' Pulitzer Prize-winning play with grace and respect.

Will Hoge's 'Tiny Little Movies' Out Today
by A.A. Cristi - Jun 26, 2020

For two decades, Will Hoge has carried the torch for American rock & roll, carving out his own blue-collar sound rooted in amplified guitars, melodic hooks, southern soul, and rootsy stomp. It's a sound that nods to the best moments of the past—the punch of Tom Petty's anthems; the countrified twang of Buck Owens' singing; the raw, greasy cool of the Rolling Stones—while still pushing forward into new territory with Hoge's storytelling and larger-than-life voice leading the charge on his new self-produced album, Tiny Little Movies, out today via Thirty Tigers.

BWW Review: TIME STANDS STILL is Harsh and Tender Contemplation on War and Relationships
by Tanya Seale - Mar 29, 2019

An exposed-brick studio apartment in Brooklyn in 2009 is the setting for Time Stands Still, a moving play by Donald Margulies, directed by Doug Finlayson, playing now at The New Jewish Theatre. Romantic partners for 8 ½ years, photojournalist Sarah (Wendy Renee Greenwood) and war correspondent James (Ben Nordstrom), return home, Sarah's face bandaged, her arm in a sling, and her leg bound with a brace as she struggles to maneuver on crutches. We don't know exactly what has happened just yet, but we know it's bad, as the play opens with poignant silences, emerging compromises, and a shared consideration for anguish. We soon learn that the couple has covered the horrors of combat, famines, and genocides; that they have nearly died several times, and that as Sarah begins recovering from the physical wounds from a roadside bomb, James has already been home and is on meds recovering from his emotional ones. The question associated with a recovery of this magnitude is, "What happens next?" And what happens after that and after that?
