On Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 8 pm and Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 4 pm, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO) performs Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's popular work Scheherazade, Op. 35 on a program with the world premiere of composer Saad Haddad's Clarinet Concerto. A commission of the PSO and the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University, the concerto features Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh. Jacques Ibert's Escales (Ports of Call) completes the array of works to be conducted by Edward T. Cone Music Director Rossen Milanov at Richardson Auditorium on the campus of Princeton University.

Headlining the program is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's fantastical Scheherazade, chronicling the plight of a brave young sultana as she spins tales to save her own life for 1001 nights. Made famous by the collection of Middle Eastern folk tales, Arabian Nights, Scheherazade uses her powers of wit and captivating storytelling to overcome a violent sultan. Concertmaster David Perry also weaves his own dazzling violin solos throughout the piece.

Currently in its 16th season, dell'Arte has filled the summer lull with fresh productions of well-known classics and rarities, performed by the developmental company's cast of young singers, supported by a fine musical ensemble.
