The state of any company's dancing can be gauged by looking at how it performs its founder's work. Of course that is no easy feat to assess with City Ballet, what with its glorious repertoire. All the same, Wednesday October 12th's program found the company disconcertingly off the mark. In politics, we follow the money; in ballet, we follow the casting.

'We're the lucky ones,' said Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) CEO Nicholas Ade as he introduced the company's 60th Anniversary Celebration at the Sunoco Theater in the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg on June 25th, 2016. Lincoln Center at the Movies, the new cinema series recently announced by Lincoln Center in partnership with Fathom Events, will open in fall 2015 with Great American Dance presenting performances by four of America's leading companies: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet Hispanico, New York City Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet. Each event will be shown in select cinemas nationwide at nearly 400 locations.

Linda Shelton, Executive Director of The Joyce Theater Foundation, announced today that due to altitude sickness that also caused her to cancel scheduled performances at the recent Vail International Dance Festival, Sara Mearns will be unable to appear in the August 13 and 14 performances of The Joyce's current Ballet Festival. American Ballet Theatre dancer Stephanie Williams will take her place in the work, Partita No. 2 in C Minor, by choreographer Emery LeCrone.

On Saturday, August 8, 2015, The Ashley Bouder Project presented their first of two performances participating in the Joyce Theater's Ballet Festival. Joining Bouder, a principal of New York City Ballet, were 7 other New York City Ballet dancers. It is good to see accomplished ballet dancers given the opportunity to perform more contemporary styles. The performance, consisting of three pieces, was one hour, with no intermission.

This remarkable Ballet Festival, designed to recognize dancers and choreographers who are creating work outside the traditional large company setting - and, in some cases, forming their own companies - will take place from today, August 4, through August 16 at The Joyce Theater and feature such rising choreographers and companies as Ballet X, The Ashley Bouder Project and

Following its successful, sold-out festival of ballet in 2013, The Joyce Theater Foundation (Linda Shelton, Executive Director) will once again present a two-week long season of America's most exciting contemporary ballet companies and choreographers. This remarkable Ballet Festival, designed to recognize dancers and choreographers who are creating work outside the traditional large company setting – and, in some cases, forming their own companies – will take place from August 4 – 16 at The Joyce Theater and feature such rising choreographers and companies as Ballet X, The Ashley Bouder Project and Joshua Beamish: MOVE the company, among others. The School of American Ballet's Workshop Performance Benefit 2015 on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 raised more than $890,000 for scholarships and school programs. The evening began with cocktails at 5:30pm in Juilliard's Morse Hall, followed by the performance at 7pm in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Lincoln Center, and concluded with a seated dinner at 9pm at the Mandarin Oriental. The evening celebrated the legendary Rudolf Nureyev and commemorated the 20th Anniversary of the Rudolf Nureyev Dance Scholarship.

On Sunday, June 31, 2015, New York City Ballet offered the sweet, the mundane, and the historical. If I were a lyricist I could write a song about this, but since my iambic pentameter is almost non-existent, and my Stephen Sondheim thesaurus nowhere to be found, I guess I'll have to push forward in everyday prose.
