The Joyce's Popular BALLET FESTIVAL Returns

The Joyce Theater Foundation (Linda Shelton, Executive Director) is thrilled to present the return of its highly anticipated Ballet Festival, a two-week showcase of some of America's most exciting contemporary ballet companies and choreographers with Joyce commissions on each program. The Festival, designed to recognize dancers and choreographers who are creating work outside the traditional large company setting - and, in many cases, forming their own companies - will take place from June 26 - July 7 at The Joyce Theater. This year's festival, supported by an endowment established with major support from the Rudolf Nureyev Dance Foundation, features the Joyce debuts of Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami and Barak Ballet, as well as the anticipated returns of Joshua Beamish/MOVETHECOMPANY, BalletX, and Ashley Bouder Project. Tickets start at $10 and can be purchased at www.Joyce.org or by calling JoyceCharge at 212-242-0800. The Joyce Theater is located at 175 Eighth Avenue at 19th Street. BWW Dance Review: The New York City Ballet, February 25, 2018
by Barnett Serchuk - Mar 5, 2018

The New York City Ballet, or the House of George Balanchine as some refer to it, is presenting a number of Balanchineless performances. This is as it should be. Balanchine has been dead for over thirty years, and we could not possibly expect revival after revival. However, we can expect a high level of competence and artistry in the new ballets now being offered. Sunday, February 25, 2018, was another example of top notch dancing, if less than stellar choreography.

BWW REVIEW: New York City Ballet Brings a Stravinsky/Balanchine Program to the David H. Koch Theater
by Rose Marija - Mar 3, 2018

On March 1, 2018, I saw one of the final performances of New York City Ballet's Winter 2018 season (ending March 4th). The Stravinsky/ Balanchine program presents some of Balanchine's most appreciated ballets, which is exciting to experience. Over the years, many dancers have had the opportunity to perform these ballets. Now, many years since the death of the choreographer/artistic director, April 30, 1983, the NYCB company continues to thrive. While a number of the older dancers take on the style of the Master, many of the corps de ballet members seem to be dancing without the full comprehension of the spirit, even the technique, which created these works. This, of course, can be explained in part by the changes in the world in which they live. We can hope for evolution in a positive direction.

BWW Review: THE ASHLEY BOUDER PROJECT Shines with Versatility
by Christina Pandolfi - Mar 20, 2017

On March 17 2017, excitement buzzed at the Peter Norton Symphony Space during the season premiere of The Ashley Bouder Project. A powerful collective that celebrates the beauty and strength of female dancers (and the resilient support of their male counterparts!) the showcase more than proved Bouder's mantra that At This Dance, Women Take the Lead.

BWW Review: New York City Ballet's ALL BALANCHINE PROGRAM, Winter 2017
by Barnett Serchuk - Jan 24, 2017

George Balanchine said that 'Allegro Brillante' contained everything he knew about classical ballet in 13 minutes. I would say a bit more, depending on the tempo the conductor is taking for the evening. But putting tempos aside, 'Allegro Brilliante' offers a ballet so rich in form and steps that it's hard to take it all in. I've been watching the ballet for over 30 years, and I still marvel and its invention and the sheer stamina it takes to perform the work.

BWW Review: The 7th ANNUAL CLIVE BARNES AWARDS
by Marsha Volgyi - Jan 13, 2017

I had the pleasure of attending the 7th Annual Clive Barnes Awards on January 9, 2017 at the Walter Reade Theater of Lincoln Center. Last year, I also attended this ceremony, which supports artists from both the theater and dance worlds through financial gifts and accolades in memory of the indefatigable Mr. Barnes. Interestingly enough, I believe that having the privilege to be there again allowed me to see how much this foundation impacts the nominees and the winners.
