Cap off the summer with the alluring songs of ocean nymphs and explorers when Opera Orlando finishes its annual Opera in Concert: Summer Concert Series with Cuban-American soprano Shannon Jennings. Central Florida native and a graduate of Lyman High School,  Ms. Jennings returns to Orlando on August 27 to present A SIREN’S SONG at the University Club of Winter Park.

Kentucky Opera will stage five performances of La bohème at The Brown Theatre this Fall to open its 70th Anniversary Season 22/23. One of the most romantic stories of all time, Giacomo Puccini's La bohème will be performed Friday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.

On June 30 Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts welcomed the Wolf Trap Opera Summer 2020 residency program cohort consisting of 18 Filene Artists, 17 Studio Artists and five Fellows. They joined Wolf Trap Opera (WTO) from across the country and around the globe for six weeks of operatic study and training.

The 20/21 season begins with Kentucky Opera's second annual Open House at the Brown Theatre. This free-of-charge event on June 14 will feature fun for all ages with engaging activities, backstage tours, performances, and a peek at the upcoming season. On the mainstage, the opera continues to humanize the art form with three productions that celebrate the importance of friendship and community. In its second season, the Awakenings series will continue to partner with social service organizations to explore the connection of the operas' themes to our society today with arts-centered conversations. The Awakenings panel discussions are designed to open our eyes to the world around us by challenging tradition, questioning social narratives and inviting varied perspectives.

The winners of the 48th annual George London Foundation Awards Competition for young American and Canadian opera singers were announced at the conclusion of the competition's final round this evening, which took place before an enthusiastic audience at Gilder Lehrman Hall at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City.

But their indoor venue, The Barns, might just give the Filene Center a run for its money. Wolf Trap Opera and Washington Concert Opera's recent production of Le Vin Herbe shows off the utilitarianism of this space while highlighting a dozen stellar vocalists. The chosen source material might not be the most compelling-but this co-production elevates the work beyond the middling libretto.

Washington Concert Opera (WCO) is excited to announce its 2018-2019 lineup, a season that celebrates strong women and the return of beloved opera stars. WCO kicks off the year with their second annual Opera Outside at Washington D.C.'s Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park on Oct 27th, followed by performances at Lisner Auditorium of Charles Gounod's Sapho on November 18th, 2018 and Gioachino Rossini's Zelmira on April 5th, 2019. Also, for the first time ever, WCO will co-present two very special performances of Frank Martin's Le vin herbe at The Barns at Wolf Trap on February 9th and 10th, 2019.

Winter is ending a day early this year, as Pittsburgh Opera Headquarters in the Strip District hosts A Song of Thrones, a Pittsburgh Opera fashion event, on March 19th.

Kim H. Kowalke, President of the Kurt Weill Foundation, has announced the semifinalists for the 2018 annual Lotte Lenya Competition, its twentieth anniversary year. The Foundation received 235 audition videos, from singer/actors ages 19-32, hailing from thirty-one US states and Puerto Rico, and sixteen countries on five continents. From that pool, fourteen men and fourteen women from the US, Canada, Austria, Germany, Israel, Italy, and Slovenia have been selected to perform at the semifinals at the Manhattan School of Music on 8 and 9 March.

First Place Winner Meghan Kasanders, 26, led the field of nine finalists at Pittsburgh Festival Opera's 7th Annual Mildred Miller International Voice Competition with her performances of Dich, teure Halle from Wagner's Tannh user and 'Come scoglio' from Mozart's Cosi fan tutte on Sunday, Oct. 22 at The Frick Art & Historical Center, Pittsburgh. The New York-based soprano received a $6,000 prize supported by Pittsburgh Festival Opera Board Member Phyllis Sidwell. Scroll down for photos!
