Michael Rothhaar BIO

Michael Rothhaar is an accomplished actor with an extensive career in both theater and film. Born in 1949 in Detroit, Michigan, Rothhaar grew up in a family of artists. His father was a painter, and his mother was a pianist. After attending college in Michigan, Rothhaar moved to California to pursue a career in acting.
Rothhaar's early career was focused on theater, and he quickly became a well-known figure in the Los Angeles theater scene. He performed in a number of productions at the Mark Taper Forum, the Los Angeles Theatre Center, and the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. In 1985, he won an LA Weekly Theater Award for his performance in "The Ballad of Soapy Smith."

He went on to appear in several other Broadway productions, including "The Crucible" in 1991 and "The Kentucky Cycle" in 1993. His performance in "The Kentucky Cycle" earned him a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play.
While Rothhaar continued to work in theater, he also began to make a name for himself in film and television. He appeared in a number of popular TV shows, including "L.A. Law," "The X-Files," and "The West Wing." He also had roles in films such as "The Doors," "The Insider," and "The Astronaut Farmer."
In recent years, Rothhaar has continued to work steadily in both theater and film. He appeared in the 2014 film "The Judge," starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, and in the 2016 film "Sully," directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks. On stage, he has performed in productions of "The Price" and "The Chosen" at the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles.

BWW Review: MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION Provokes and Delights at Washington Stage Guild

Appearing at the Washington Stage Guild again, thirty-one years after the company first produced it, MRS. WARRENS PROFESSION is a witty, biting, and poignant story that remains as relevant today as when it was first penned by George Bernard Shaw in 1893.

BWW Interview: Theatre Life with Michael Rothhaar

DC’S little jewel of a theatre company Washington Stage Guild (WSG) was built on producing the works of George Bernard Shaw. In its long and distinguished history of producing high quality theatre the company has produced over thirty productions of Shaw’s work.

BWW Review: 1776 Offers an Inside Look at the Imperfect Men Who First Strived For a More Perfect Union

Having seen the musical HAMILTON when it was in Los Angeles, like many others I learned more important details about the founding fathers while watching it than I felt I had ever learned in school. Lin-Manuel Miranda who created that uber-successful musical in 2015, has said that 1776 THE MUSICAL, written in 1969, during another time of political and social unrest in the United States, has 'one of the best books-if not the best-ever written for musical theatre.' And now I can say I certainly agree with him. In fact, The perfect way to prove the arts can teach valuable history lessons to its audiences is by encouraging everyone to see 1776 THE MUSICAL, presented by La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts and McCoy Rigby Entertainment with musical direction by Jeff Rizzo and impeccably directed & staged by Glenn Casale through Sunday, February 3, 2019 at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts or at The Soraya at CSUN from Friday, February 8 through Sunday, February 10.

BWW Review: Appealing New Production of SOUTH PACIFIC Sails Into La Mirada Theater

Armed with a grand, sweeping songbook from Rodgers and Hammerstein, and a romantic, progressive-for-its-time book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, it is difficult not to be continually enchanted by SOUTH PACIFIC, the groundbreaking 1949 stage musical based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Even better… sandwiched between memorable songs, romantic interludes, and cheeky, comedic banter is the show's surprisingly candid exploration of race relations---a topic that is, of course, still very much top-of-mind in today's seemingly more divided world. With such important ideological stakes in mind, when a production of this musical presents its material well and in the best possible light, you're almost always guaranteed a show that can still pack an emotional wallop while entertaining you at the same time. Such is the case with McCoy Rigby Entertainment's irresistibly appealing new production of SOUTH PACIFIC, now currently on stage at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts through May 13, 2018.

BWW Review: Director Michael Rothhaar Transforms THE FOREIGNER Into The Laughfest It Was Meant To Be

When I heard the Morgan-Wixson Theatre was presenting THE FOREIGNER by Larry Shue, I was hesitant to review the show, wondering why anyone would want to produce a show I had found offensive and not at all funny the first time I saw it elsewhere. But I am happy to report director Michael Rothhaar has mined every moment of humor in Shue's play, keeping me and the audience in stitches throughout thanks to his obvious knowledge on how to present it, as well as his excellent casting of all roles.
