HURRICANE DIANE Comes to Rec Room Arts in May


Rec Room Arts will present the Houston premiere of Hurricane Diane, Madeleine George's (Hulu's Only Murders in the Building) Obie Award-winning play that turns the Greek god Dionysus into Diane, a lesbian permaculture gardener whose secret mission is to save the planet from the ravages of climate change. Lily Wolff (Alley Theatre) will direct the production.

DANCE NATION Announced At Rec Room


Rec Room Arts will begin the 2022 season with the Houston premiere of Dance Nation, Clare Barron's award-winning play about pre-teen competitive dancers and the burden of adolescence. Sophia Watt will direct the production, with choreography by Skye Bronfenbrenner. Preview performances begin January 20, with an official opening on Saturday, January 22. Performances will run through February 5.

Rec Room Arts' 201819 season wraps up with the spellbinding adaptation of Georg B chner's Woyzeck. Artistic Director, Matt Hune and exciting young writer, Maurielle McGarvey have re-invented B chner's 19th century tragedy into a jaw-dropping thriller set in modern suburbia. Despite funding cuts, bureaucrats run amok, apathy, and a rodent infestation, a small, multiracial group of teachers launch a last-minute effort to save the school, and put their careers, futures, and safety in the hands of a fast-talking administrator who may be in way over his head. The tenuous situation also raises fears and anxieties among students and within the volcanic neighborhood that surrounds the school.

Rec Room Arts launches into their third year with a powerhouse of a season that boldly tackles several of America's most divisive issues: guns, education, and race. The lineup, consisting exclusively of regional premieres and world premiere adaptations, includes a regional premiere of EXIT STRATEGY by Ike Holter, award-winning playwright of last year's hit play SENDER; a remount of Houston's newest, immersive holiday tradition, HANSEL AND GRETEL; a regional premiere of ON THE EXHALE by Martin Zimmerman; a regional premiere of THE ROYALE by Marco Ramirez; and a world premiere adaptation of Georg Buchner's groundbreaking 19th century play, WOYZECK.

WRITING OUR WORLD Writes Women Into Center Stage


Writing Our World, a 10 minute play reading series devoted entirely to works by women of color and directed by women of color, is having its inaugural show on Sunday, April 29th at 7pm at Rec Room. The reading series is the brainchild of two women, Marissa Castillo and Candice D'Meza, who met as castmates in Main Street Theater's production "Men on Boats". The reading series is produced in partnership with Rec Room Arts Artist Residency Program.

BLESSED THIEVES at Rec Room Gives Houstonians A Chance To Remove Their Masks


BLESSED THIEVES, an interactive installation created by local actor Candice D'Meza marks the final weekend of Rec Room Arts' 2018 Residency Festival. The exhibit invites participants to explore how they craft their public persona, the ways they handle shame and vulnerability, and how society supports or discourages authentic self-expression, whether in the public sphere or on social media.
