Review: VANYA, SONIA, MASHA AND SPIKE Delivers Chekhovian Comedy at Its Best

Walk across the creaky kitchen floor and take a seat in one of the old wooden chairs along the walls. Don't mind the noises. Don't worry about those sharp flashes of light. You're safe. You're in a a?oegooda??...

BWW Review: THE HEIRESS at Arena Stage

Perhaps the biggest problem with 'The Heiress' is that it's difficult to invest in. It's hard to root for Catherine beyond hoping she tells Morris off, and that's more about dislike of him than support for her. After all, we can all get behind telling off a bad ex. It's just a shame that The Heiress doesn't give us the opportunity to go deeper than that.

BWW Review: SMART PEOPLE Uses Comedy to Tackle Race at Arena Stage

As topics go, you couldn't pick a more immediate one than race in America. And as cities go, Washington is an apt location for a production of Lydia R. Diamond's SMART PEOPLE. It's set during the Obama era and takes on the topic of race with biting comedy. Seema Sueko directs a new run at Arena Stage, featuring a four-person cast that is combustible and exciting to watch.

BWW Review: DIET OF WORMS Breaks Taboos as Well as Religious Relics in Historic Landmark Church

Set in Germany in 1523 when women had few lifestyle choices open to them, the play offers a very modern reimagining of key events in the life of historic figure Katharina von Bora, a nun who became the wife of Martin Luther, German leader of the Protestant Reformation. Beyond what is found in the writings of Luther and some of his contemporaries, little is known about Katharina. Despite this, she is often considered one of the most important participants of the Reformation because of her role in helping to define Protestant family life and setting the tone for clergy marriages.
