This well crafted, world premiere piece by Iyona Blake is a compelling look into the lives of four African American sisters and the family bonds that help them through the challenges and life changes they face.

BWW Review: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at Olney Theatre Center

There are certain musical theatre pieces that audiences see on Broadway and believe the version they saw is the only way the material can be interpreted.  Beauty and the Beast definitely falls into that category for the sole reason of that once you’ve seen how Disney produced it originally, it’s impossible to see it done in a less spectacular way.

BWW Review: CROWNS at Creative Cauldron

Regina Taylor's Crowns is the story of a young teen from Brooklyn sent to live with her grandmother after the traumatic death of her brother. The more time she spends in South Carolina, the more she learns about herself, her ancestors, and the beautiful art of hat-wearing. Crowns not only draws from old southern traditions within black churches but of generations long before them, passed down through beautiful hymnals and energetic storytelling.

BWW Review: Signature Theatre's SPUNK Lacks, Well… Spunk

I've never been disappointed by a show at Signature Theatre. Even their ongoing Grand Hotel, which is working with some less-than-stellar source material, is elevated by the wonderful craftsmanship and talented artists this theater welcomes. The same can unfortunately not be said of the disappointing Spunk, which opened in Signature's more intimate ARK theater on Friday. Zora Neale Hurston's masterful prose falls flat in a production that feels like it opened too soon, resulting in an evening lacking in the gumption this show tries to champion.

Wolfe (Jelly's Last Jam, Shuffle Along). The production is directed by Timothy Douglas (Arena's Nina Simone: Four Women, Disgraced). Spunk runs from April 30 through June 23 in Signature's ARK Theatre.
