One of the most anticipated plays being produced in St. Louis this season is Matthew Lopez’s epic masterpiece THE INHERITANCE. Produced by Tesseract Theatre Company, THE INHERITANCE is a two-part play spanning three generations of gay men and the effect their relationships have on one another. Inspired by the novel “Howard’s End,” THE INHERITANCE debuted in London’s West End in March of 2018, before transferring to Broadway in November of 2019. THE INHERITANCE is the winner of countless awards including the Olivier Award for Best New Play, the Tony Award for Best Play, and was recognized as Best Play by London’s Evening Standard Theatre Award, Critic’s Circle Award, South Bank Sky Arts Award, Drama Desk Award, Drama League Award, New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and GLAAD Media Award. Broadway World had the opportunity to sit down with the Director Stephen Peirick, and three members of his acting troupe, Tyson Cole, Jonathan Hey, and Jacob Schmidt, who will bring the regional premiere of this important work to audiences in and around the St. Louis Area. 

The Inheritance transposes EM Forster's novel Howard's End to 21st Century New York.  Decades after the AIDS epidemic, three generations of gay men grapple with the tragedy of their past and what it means for their future. This two-part epic explores healing, class divide and what it means to call a place home.

THE INHERITANCE is designed to make an audience feel quite a few different kinds of emotions: sadness certainly over lives lost and squandered; seething bitterness over a country adrift; humor over the many creative ways in which smart people cope and endure; and perhaps even a strong inclination to read or stream E.M. Forster’s HOWARDS END.

The Inheritance is now playing at Geffen Playhouse. In contemporary Manhattan, Eric and Toby are 30-somethings who seem to be very much in love and thriving. The Geffen Playhouse west coast premieres the Stephen Daldry production of four-time Tony Award winner The Heritance October 16, 2022 (already in previews). Mike Donahue directs the all-out cast of Bill Brochtrup, Tantoo Cardinal, Juan Castano, Jay Donnell, Israel Erron Ford, August Gray Gall, Adam Kantor, Eddie Lopez, Kasey Mahaffy, Miguel Pinzon, Avi Roque, Bradley James Tejeda and Tuc Watkins. Tuc carved out some time from his rehearsals to chat about this Matthew López production, as well as, some of his career highlights.

We returned this week for Part 2 of ZACH's production of THE INHERITANCE. As I sat ensconced as comfortably as possible in my seat for Part 2, I felt the warmth of familiarity with the characters I'd come to know from Part 1 and thought to myself how lovely a well written serial piece might go over in the world of live theatre. It's an investment, there are many reasons it wouldn't work, and as the history of theatre has shown us, the rare six hour production had best be epic. This was true of ANGELS IN AMERICA, but it's not always the case with Lopez's THE INHERITANCE.

What did our critic think of ZACH'S THE INHERITANCE PART I at ZACH Kleburg Theatre? As a young Puerto Rican growing up in Florida, playwright Matthew Lopez read in a magazine about the acclaimed Merchant Ivory film adapted from E.M. Forster's novel Howards End, and asked his mom to take him to see the film. Since his outlets as a young man were books, theatre and movies, it stands to reason that Howards End and E.M. Forster play such a literally integral role in Lopez's sprawling theatrical adaptation of the novel. His mother later also bought Lopez the book. He fell in love with it, and fell in love with Forster or, more specifically, Forster's queerness.

Geffen Playhouse announced the full cast for its West Coast premiere of the Stephen Daldry production of four-time Tony Award winner The Inheritance, written by Matthew López and directed by Mike Donahue.

ZACH Theatre has announced the cast for the regional premiere of The Inheritance Part 1 playing August 10 – September 4, 2022. The production will star Peter Frechette as E.M. Forster (“Morgan”).

Tony Goldwyn is back onstage this season in one of the most poignant roles of his career, which happens to be in one of the most powerful plays that Broadway has seen in many years. The play is The Inheritance, and you can catch it now through March 15 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
