BWW Review: History, Music And Emotion Collide in AUDIBLE SONGS FROM ROCKWOOD

Simone Schmidt's AUDIBLE SONGS FROM ROCKWOOD receives its first staging for theatre at this years' SummerWorks festival. The song-cycle is based on the album of the same title by Schmidt's band Fiver and explores the cases of several people who were incarcerated at the Rockwood Asylum for the Criminally Insane between 1856 and 1881. Although it would be easy to take advantage of the source material and lean into shock and spectacle, Schmidt takes care to respect the stories of the women and in turn has created a moving, educational, and memorable experience for audiences.

BWW Review: HAND TO GOD is a Disturbing, Complex, and Funny Look at Good Versus Evil…with Puppets

Dark comedy and puppets seem to be a natural link, given the number of film and theatre stories that have incorporated both in the last several years. BWW Review: Soulpepper's IDOMENEUS Resonates Through Jarring Storytelling

'That's not what happened.' Soulpepper's IDOMENEUS tells the story of a famous Greek myth - but plays with the mode of storytelling to create something remarkable. Roland Schimmelpfennig's modern play comes to life in a timeless zone of monochromatic universality in Alan Dilworth's production, designed by Lorenzo Savoini. Using a chorus of voices, the narrative weaves between past and present, fact and fiction - presenting themes that resonate not only within the world of Soulpepper, but within the world at large.
