Immediately upon entering the theater, you'll realize Once isn't going to be your typical musical theatre fare.

If you've ever thought, "They'll turn anything into a musical"…well, you're not wrong. Yet somehow, a musical about a competition to win a truck in a small Texas town brings subject matter that might be heavier than the truck itself.

Sometimes you don't need a lavish design to make a musical about Vegas play well. I mean, it would have definitely brought another level to Vintage Theatre's current musical production of Honeymoon in Vegas, but the cast is what gives this one its dazzle.

The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (FAC) is excited to announce the final Mainstage production of the season and regional premiere, 9 to 5: The Musical May 19-June 12. Directed and choreographed by Associate Director of Performing Arts, Nathan Halvorson, this hilarious new musical based on the blockbuster film is an outrageous, thought?provoking story of friendship and getting ahead in the Rolodex era.

The performance on Thursday evening carried more than the usual share of preview jitters: lines were stumbled over, cues missed, and overall the performance did not attain the level of professionalism that the FAC is capable of providing...But in spite of this I was captivated, inspired both by the performance I saw and by what it had the potential to become. Because when Agnes of God works (and it did, more often than not) it's a thrilling mystery and an engrossing parable about faith, skepticism, and the psychology behind our deeply held beliefs. Encompassed by Christopher L Sheley's beautifully minimalist halo of a set, Levy and his cast take the audience on a journey into the dark uncharted territory of the human soul.

These cherished stories (and some forgotten classics) get a new breath of life and a newly found appreciation through a web of comedy, drama, romance and with traces of Cirque de Soleil with a set that is truly something to behold!

METAMORPHOSES by Mary Zimmerman (directed by Geoffrey Kent) opens August 16 and runs through September 22, 2013 at The Aurora Fox Studio Theatre (9900 East Colfax Avenue).
