“Mufasa: The Lion King,” the new film coming to theaters Dec. 20 explores the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands. The film has an all-star roster of talent bringing new and fan-favorite characters to life—plus, celebrated award-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda is writing the film’s songs produced by Mark Mancina and Miranda, with additional music and performances by Lebo M.

Said Miranda, “‘The Lion King’ has an incredible musical legacy with music from some of the greatest songwriters around, and I'm humbled and proud to be a part of it. It's been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa's story to life, and we can't wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters."

Blending live-action filmmaking techniques with photoreal computer-generated imagery, “Mufasa: The Lion King” is directed by Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins, produced by Adele Romanski & Mark Ceryak, and executive produced by Peter Tobyansen.

New and returning cast members were called on to lend their voices to the film:

• Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, a lion prince with a bright future who accepts Mufasa into his family as a brother
• Tiffany Boone as Sarabi
• Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki
• Preston Nyman as Zazu
• Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, a formidable lion with big plans for his pride
• Thandiwe Newton as Taka’s mother, Eshe
• Lennie James as Taka’s father, Obasi
• Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa’s mother, Afia
• Keith David as Mufasa’s father, Masego
• John Kani as Rafiki
• Seth Rogen as Pumbaa
• Billy Eichner as Timon
• Donald Glover as Simba
• Introducing Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala
• And Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala
• Additional casting includes Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis and Dominique Jennings.

Blue Ivy as Simba and Nala’s daughter 🙄. I like Barry Jenkins as director, but honestly, after the fiasco that was the addition of “Scuttlebutt” to The Little Mermaid, I’m worried about Lin’s work here. He’s obviously supremely talented, but I’m not really a fan of his melodies/beats. Lyrically, he’s better.

I loathed the previous "photorealistic" LION KING movie, but am more optimistic about this based on the trailer. Visually, it already looks better than the last one and probably helps that they aren't trying to recreate the animated movie. Barry Jenkins is one of my favorite living filmmakers, and I'm excited to hear what Lin-Manuel brings to the songs.

The conformity of the era:  every unique filmmaker will have to sell out to the Mouse House or superhero franchises.

Love Barry Jenkins, but personally could not be less interested in this prequel that it seems nobody was asking for.

Honestly, if a prequel has to happen I would rather see a story from Scar's POV, maybe similar to Cruella. 

The shot-for-shot and lifeless 'live action' Lion King remake made bank at the box office in 2019 so odds are high this one will probably make a fortune no matter what - although considering how the new Little Mermaid underperformed last year, maybe it's not such a guaranteed hit.

Taka has been Scar's birth name in previous prequels stories to "The Lion King", and Taka is listed second on the cast list, so it not impossible we will get a decent amount of Scar's POV and story, even though the movie is titled "Mufusa"

Honestly the trailer looked awful and we could do without Lin  for a few years.
