BroadwayWorld was saddened to report that Broadway veteran Merwin Foard recently passed away at 59 years old. Born September 16, 1960 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Foard was last seen on Broadway in Aladdin as a standby for Jafar/Sultan.

Earlier this week, BroadwayWorld was deeply saddened to report that legendary Tony Award winning composer and lyricist Jerry Herman has passed away. Today, we're remembering Herman with a look back at some photos from our archives. Check them out below!

Geva Theatre Center presents La Cage Aux Folles, with book by Harvey Fierstein, music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, based on the play by Jean Poiret, directed by Melissa Rain Anderson, with musical direction by Don Kot, and choreography by Sam Hay in the Elaine P. Actor and singer Gavin Creel has appeared in THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE and the 2009 revival of HAIR and on Broadway, as well as PROMETHEUS BOUND at a.r.t. in Cambridge, MA., the 2004 Broadway Revival of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, The Goodman Theatre/Kennedy Center production of BOUNCE, as well as HAIR and MARY POPPINS on the West End.

Due to the fabulous increase of Musical Theatre productions in Brazil, CAL-Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras, the most famous Drama School and Theatrical Research Institution in the Country, located in the middle of the amazing Rio de Janeiro forest, opened a program of several Musical Theatre workshops called MUSICAL THEATRE DIVE (MERGULHO NO MUSICAL). The project is directed by Mirna Rubim, a distinguished Brazilian singer and actress (THE SOUND OF MUSIC, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES) with the colaboration of Menelick de Carvalho.

Last week on April 20, 2010, Actor's Equity's David Westphal hosted the famed Gypsy Robe Ceremony for company members of AMERICAN IDIOT at the St. James Theatre. A long-standing opening night tradition on the Great White Way, the fabled Gypsy Robe is bestowed upon a veteran Broadway chorus member for each opening production. In what has now become a theatrical ritual, originating on Broadway 60 years ago, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES chorus member Dale Hensley turned over the robe to AMERICAN IDIOT cast member Andrew Call. BroadwayWorld was there for the celebration.

To borrow the lyrics from 'The Best of Times' - the joy was contagious, the entourage outrageous, it was hot and hectic, effervescent and eclectic at LA CAGE AUX FOLLES when, on Sunday, April 18, 2010, the cast made its way to the stage for the traditional Gypsy Robe Ceremony just prior to the musical's official opening later that evening.
