Forty-four years ago, in 1978, the original Bob Fosse's 'Dancin'' opened on Broadway. It was the quintessential culmination of the collection of Bob Fosse's choreography up to that point in time. He won a Tony award that year for Best Choreography for 'Dancin'.'

The tortuous true story of Mayerling was first set to music composed by Franz Liszt, by Kenneth MacMillan, in 1978; a giant Choreographer and Innovator in the world of Ballet. MacMillan's Mayerling is the forboding story of the 1889 Murder/Suicide of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth's Syphilitic and addicted son, Prince Rudolf, and his teenage lover, Mary Vetsera.
The Royal Ballet, which has not performed in Los Angeles in 24 years, has stepped out on a limb to present this. This is not your usual Ballet Company fare. Contrary to the usual fluffy story about love conquers all, this is not that in the least. We find flawed and even demented characters pouring their hearts out, in the name of love and adoration.

In this contemporary musical version of the famous (and infamous) 1978 movie adapted from the 1974 Stephen King novel, Carrie: The Musical follows a young woman with telekinetic powers. An outcast at school, where she is bullied viciously for her differences, Carrie (played by the very capable Tianna Cohen) is also lost at home, with a fervently and obsessively religious mother (the powerful Leah Dalrymple) whose love traps her and figuratively and literally wont let her go. When PE teacher Miss Gardner (the vocally strong Jeanette Airen), kind classmate Sue Snell (the poignant Malissa Marlow...who also directs the production), and boyfriend Tommy Ross (Broadway-calibur Noah Canada) reach out to try and help Carrie, it seems that for once, Carrie might have a shot at being accepted. But Chris Hargensen (Choreographer Kena Worthen), the class's most vicious bully along with her whipped boyfriend Billy Nolan (the bleach-blonde Conner Stevens), have other ideas. Pushed to the brink, Carrie's powers threaten to overwhelm her, and destroy everyone around her.

As a way of introducing myself as the new DANCE REVIEWER for Broadway World L. A., I am reporting on an historic event in which I participated at St. Luke's Theatre on March 26th, 2018 in NYC: the 40th-year anniversary and reunion of the cast members of the opening of Tony Award-Winning Bob Fosse's DANCIN' on Broadway at The Broadhurst Theatre on March 27, 1978.
Joining the ranks of the thoroughly-revised musicals is Working, whose latest cast recording debuted from its recent London cast. The musical, with a score by Stephen Schwartz and book and lyrics by Schwartz and assorted collaborators, originally debuted on Broadway in 1978, where it flopped rather spectacularly. It's a Chorus Line-esque collection of stories based on interviews with workers from across America, from housewives to teachers to craftsmen and more.
Squabbalogic captures Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey's (Book, Music and Lyrics) original vision of the iconic story in THE ORIGINAL GREASE.
Broadway fans had plenty of reasons to celebrate this year, with dozens of shows having opened since January, hundreds of actors having made their debuts, and many more having returned to the stage for critically acclaimed performances. Not all news was good though, as we also suffered a loss of an incredible amount of talent.
Below, BroadwayWorld sends a fond farewell to those who passed away in 2014.
When most young theatre geeks think of what they want to do in the world of entertainment, they picture themselves on stage before adoring fans. Not Lynda Lavin. The Mayfield High School class of '71 grad, who attended Cuyahoga Community College and Cleveland State, decided while working as a high school student at Musicarnival, the legendary Cleveland tent theatre, that being a stage manager was her ticket to a life in the theatre.
Probing into the lives of real people often yields fascinating theatre. The classical musical CHORUS LINE was based on interviews that Elyrian, James Kirkwood, wove into a fascinating tale of the true life and theatrical experiences of Broadway singers and dancers.
Some of Broadway's brightest--including Bryan Batt, Mary Bond Davis and more--were featured in the cast of 'The Broadway Musicals of 1978' on June 19th
