Joy Gregory is an American writer, director, and producer who has made a significant impact on the world of theater. Born in New York City, Gregory grew up in the Bronx, where she attended the High School of Music and Art. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barnard College and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama. Gregory began her career as a playwright, with her first play, "Shades of Brown," premiering at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 1986. He has directed productions at Playwrights Horizons NY, Ensemble Studio Theater NY, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Lookingglass Theater Company in Chicago, Circle X in Los Angeles, The Resident Ensemble, New Century Theatre Company, Washington Ensemble Theatre, and Seattle Shakespeare Company.
