Two books in the University Press of Kentucky's Screen Classics series have been named award finalists by the Theatre Library Association.Ziegfeld and His Follies: A Biography of Broadway's Greatest Producer by Cynthia Brideson and Sara Brideson was one of ten finalists for the George Freedley Memorial Award for an exemplary work in the field of live theatre or performance. In addition, Dalton Trumbo: Blacklisted Hollywood Radical by Larry Ceplair and Christopher Trumbo was one of eight finalists for the Richard Wall Memorial Award for an exemplary work in the field of recorded performance.

Kimberly Faye Greenberg is quickly becoming the 'go-to' gal for Fanny Brice, the legendary first female torch singer and comedienne of her time. A 1920's Ziegfeld Follies star, recording artist, film actor and voice of 'Baby Snooks' on the radio for 25 years, the Broadway musical Funny Girl, which then became a movie, was based on her life. Kimberly has been said to be 'the closest you will ever get to the real Funny Girl'. She won critics over when she appeared as 'Fanny' in the solo show One Night with Fanny Brice, Off-Broadway, receiving critical acclaim and a nomination for an IBTA Best Solo Performance Award.

The world premiere production of the brand new musical comedy Bullets Over Broadway, written by Woody Allen and based on the screenplay by Allen and Douglas McGrath for the 1994 film, will begin preview performances tomorrow, March 11 and officially open Thursday, April 10, 2014 at The St. James Theatre (246 West 44th Street). The new musical will be directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman. None of the actors on the stage looked comfortable at last nights second instalment of 5pounds of Repertory Theatre, Sally...the musical. Precisely because it was a musical and the cast and director Celeste Cody were exposed to the challenges of the genre. It's understandable as well, because even the most talented of musical theatre performers can look out of their depth and treading water with material they are uncomfortable with. What this cast did have however, was the courage and the through line of character and plot to present to the audience the story of Sally, a young girl working as a dishwasher at the Alley restaurant who is thrust into the spotlight posing as a famous Russian dancer.

Noted performer and music historian, Benjamin Sears has an unprecedented familiarity with both Irving Berlin's work and the writings about him, much of which he has brought together in the new, The Irving Berlin Reader, part of the Readers on American Music Series from Oxford University Press, available in stores on April 6, 2012.
