BWW Review: ROMEO & JULIET at San Francisco Ballet Delivers a Beautiful Production of the Timeless Romantic Tragedy
by Jim Munson - May 10, 2021

San Francisco Ballet's revisiting of Helgi Tomasson's 'Romeo & Juliet' is, in a word, gorgeous. The dancing, the design and especially the music – all gorgeous. The penultimate program of its 2021 Digital Season is available for streaming through May 26th in a top-notch 2015 video capture featuring a nigh on perfect cast. Not all narrative ballets transfer effectively to a video format, but happily this one does, due to its focus on interactions between pairs and small groups, and its relative lack of the kind of mathy, geometric corps de ballet set pieces that can look somewhat diminished and underwhelming on a TV or computer screen.

BWW Review: American Ballet Theatre's SWAN LAKE
by Wesley Doucette - Jul 8, 2019

Swan Lake is an icon, the Hamlet of the ballet world and, much like Hamlet, audiences might need reminding that it is more than images and a melody; it is a bizarre and symphonic evening-length work of poetry. ABT's production puts full faith in the breadth of this work, leaving the magical and melodramatic elements leaning more towards camp than enchantment. Luckily, the capacity of Swan Lake to present the expressivity of the human form is on full display. With principal dancer Hee Seo leading the performance as an Odette seemingly etched in glass, the centrality of Swan Lake to the choreographic art form is reaffirmed.

BWW Review: NEWSIES Sells at Fort Wayne Civic Theatre
by The Marriage Matinee - Jul 31, 2018

Our subject today is pretty simple… newspapers and the people who sell 'em. We are going to start this review by asking you to try to picture a special kind of super-tabloid. This Fort Wayne Civic Theatre adaptation of the 1992 Disney movie musical - itself inspired by the New York newsboy strike of 1899 comes roaring to life on stage, and this show certainly takes it to you. Seriously though… You don't hear lines like "We've got a union!" coming from "The Little Mermaid."

EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Review: TUTU: DANCE IN ALL ITS GLORY, Pleasance Courtyard
by Natalie O'Donoghue - Aug 27, 2017

The show is performed by six dancers: The TUTU men, polymorphous artists who struggle with many different interpretations, faces and styles. They want to entirely feel the freedom and universality of dance. With them, laughter becomes poetic, theatre emerges on stage and things come to life. Successively classical, contemporary, ballroom, sport, academic or acrobatic, the dance of the TUTU men is versatile, atypical, irreverent, gentle, fun and always artistic. TUTU shows dance in all its glory.

BWW Review: EAST OF THE SUN at CirqueLouis
by Keith Waits - Jun 14, 2017

As the traditional circus format has faded more from view, the 'cirque' idea has adopted a higher profile. Cirque de Soleil is an international juggernaut, a cross between dance and human acrobatics presented with a layer of glitzy showmanship, that occupies rare territory in the world of theatre. But more and more smaller, local companies have sprung up around the U.S. CirqueLouis brings this idea to Louisville, a fresh approach to narrative storytelling on a larger scale than most companies.

BWW Review: New York City Ballet's ALL BALANCHINE PROGRAM, Winter 2017
by Barnett Serchuk - Jan 24, 2017

George Balanchine said that 'Allegro Brillante' contained everything he knew about classical ballet in 13 minutes. I would say a bit more, depending on the tempo the conductor is taking for the evening. But putting tempos aside, 'Allegro Brilliante' offers a ballet so rich in form and steps that it's hard to take it all in. I've been watching the ballet for over 30 years, and I still marvel and its invention and the sheer stamina it takes to perform the work.
