The 31st Annual Fred & Adele Astaire Awards took place last night, June 3 at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University (566 LaGuardia Place). Winners included: Charlotte d'Amboise- PIPPIN (Outstanding Female Dancer in a Broadway Show), Eric Lajuan Summers- MOTOWN (Outstanding Male Dancer in a Broadway Show), Chet Walker- PIPPIN (Outstanding Choreographer of a Broadway Show), and Sidi Larbi Cherkaouit- Anna Karenina (Outstanding Choreographer in a Feature Film).

Bergen County Players to Host Sing-Along SOUND OF MUSIC, 6/21-23

The theater will be alive with The Sound of Music when a one-hour concert sing-along adaptation of the classic show is presented by Bergen County Players (BCP) as the final Second Stage production of the 80th season. Running for just three performances, from June 21st through June 23rd, shows will be on Friday and Saturday night at 8pm while the Sunday matinee curtain will be raised at 2pm. Tony Award-winners Susan Stroman, Bebe Neuwirth, Cady Huffman, Kathleen Marshall and Karen Ziemba are set to present at the 31st Annual Fred & Adele Astaire Awards taking place on Monday, June 3 at 7:30pm at New York University's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Also set to present at the awards are Mary Testa, Christiane Noll, Harry Belafonte, Rex Reed, Michael Riedel, Anna Bergman, Lee Roy Reams, Dancing with the Stars' Tony Dovolani, Carson Kressley and Countess Lu Ann de Lesseps.

The Bergen County Players (BCP) of Oradell will conclude its 80th mainstage season with a limited engagement of Marc Camoletti's Tony Award-winning acclaimed non-stop farce Boeing Boeing, directed by Alyson Cohn. Doors will slam and laughs will fly at the Little Firehouse Theatre on Kinderkamack Road in Oradell from May 4th through June 2nd. Shows will be on Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm, but there will be no performances on Memorial Day weekend. The Astaire Awards is the only awards show to honor excellence in dance and choreography on Broadway and in film and were first started in 1982 by the late Fred Astaire and the late Douglas Watt (a critic and writer for the NY Daily News and The New Yorker).

On Wednesday, September 5 at 7:30pm at NYU's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts (566 LaGuardia Place), dance icon Mikhail Baryshnikov will be honored at the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation's "Bright Lights Shining Stars" Gala where he will receive their prestigious Ambassador for the Arts Award which will be presented to him by longtime friend and colleague Liza Minnelli. Last year's Ambassador for the Arts Award recipient, celebrated American singer, songwriter, musician and four-time Grammy-winner Roberta Flack, will also be present on 9/5. Also set to appear that evening will be ABT star Julie Kent, Oscar-nominee and celebrated dancer Leslie Browne and Tony Award-winning choreographers Jerry Mitchell and Andy Blankenbuehler.

This summer, from June 28th-July 5th at the Sheraton NY just north of Times Square, 1,500 student dancers from across the United States (ages 7-18) will attend the New York City Dance Alliance National Season Finale which last year awarded a grand total of $2.9 million in college scholarships. Several past student participants have gone on to perform on Broadway and be principal dancers at some of the country's most respected dance companies. Past participants have also been winners of the hit TV show So You Think You Can Dance and also appear as the pros on Dancing with the Stars.

Local Music Groups Join Bergen County Players' THE MUSIC MAN

Oradell's Bergen County Players (BCP) will kick off its 80th season (2012-2013) with Meredith Willson's classic musical, The Music Man. As part of BCP's ongoing commitment to community engagement, the production will feature school and community music ensembles at performances between the dates of September 6th through October 6th, 2012. This venture has been dubbed "The Music Man Band Project."

NEWSIES, SMASH and More to Offer Workshops at NYC Dance Alliance Season Finale, 7/1-5

The hit TV show Smash, the Broadway production of Newsies, Cirque du Soleil, The Radio Christmas Spectacular and the upcoming Broadway productions of Matilda and Flashdance are set to take part in the upcoming New York City Dance Alliance National Season Finale which will host 1,500 student dancers from across the United States (ages 7-18). Between July 1st and July 5th they will all offer audition workshops during the event for participants. The workshops will be led by Tony Award-winning Newsies Choreographer Christopher Gatelli, Smash Choreographer Josh Bergasse, Matilda Casting Director Nora Brennan, Flashdance Choreographer Sergio Trujillo, Cirque du Soleil Dance Casting Director Nicole Lamontagne and Radio City Christmas Spectacular Casting Coordinators Michelle Kashinsky and Beth Zitzman.
