Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces the full company for the world premiere of Tazewell Thompson's inspirational a cappella music infused play, Jubilee. Inspired by the world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers, this uplifting new work chronicles the bold African American ensemble as they travel the world, captivating kings, queens and audiences with hymns and spiritual songs supported by their rich voices. Written and directed by Thompson with vocal arrangements and music direction by Dianne Adams McDowell, Jubilee runs April 26 - June 2, 2019 in the Kreeger Theater.

Based on the original novel Madame Sousatzka written by Bernice Rubens, SOUSATZKA is set in London, England in 1982 and tells the story of a musical prodigy torn between two powerful women from vastly different worlds: his mother, a political refugee from South Africa and his piano teacher, a brilliant eccentric with a shattered past. These two proud, iconoclastic women must ultimately cross cultural and racial divides to find common ground, or else jeopardize the young musician's destiny.

Hayes Story' a new musical theatre work commissioned by Music Hall, about the life and career of Roland Hayes, the groundbreaking African-American lyric tenor and composer who broke color barriers to become a world-renowned artist - acclaimed on the biggest stages in Europe and finally, in his own United States, on Saturday, December 3rd at 8:00 PM

Breath & Imagination, directed by Saundra McClain is the true and inspirational story of the life and struggles of Roland Hayes, the first African American classical vocalist of world renown. VSC's production will feature Travis Pratt, who appeared on season 8 of America's Got Talent, in the role of Hayes, and marks the first time a true tenor has portrayed this role. The show features operatic, classical and spiritual music.
