Review: THE EFFECT at Coal Mine Theatre

In asking the persistent questions of how much of what we consider love, the personality, and even the soul is of our own making, and how much is just chemical, Mitchell Cushman’s searing production immediately gets under your skin, and it’s no placebo.

BWW Review: THE EFFECT at Santa Fe Playhouse

The Effect, written by British playwright Lucy Prebble (American audience members might know her best as a co-producer and writer on HBO's Succession) and playing now at the Santa Fe Playhouse, is a beautifully styled, engaging evening of theatre that asks the audience to grapple with issues of free will, medication, mental health, consent, and what it means to love someone (with or without the assistance of chemical agents).

West End Productions Presents Lucy Prebble's THE EFFECT At N4th

West End Productions, voted ABQTHEMAG Best of the City Top 5 2017 kicks off its third thrilling season with Lucy Prebble's brilliant, surreal and achingly moving play, The Effect. She subtitles this startling piece with the tag line: A play for four people, in love and sorrow. But what is truly startling is that Prebble has written a shocker about two pairs of star-crossed lovers, framed with a scathing examination of Big Pharma and set amid grueling clinical drug tests. Romantic? YES! Erotic? YES! Thought provoking? YES! Funny? YES! YES! YES! True to West End's mission of bringing the best plays from the British Isles to New Mexico - we are proud to introduce Albuquerque to one of England's finest and most exciting young playwrights.

BWW Review: New England Premiere of THE EFFECT at Gloucester Stage Company

It is a simple premise: Two candidates in a pharmaceutical drug trial fall in love, but is their chemistry real, or induced? This scientific debate is the subject of Lucy Prebble's THE EFFECT, now in its New England Premiere at Gloucester Stage Company. Under the direction of Sam Weisman, the play stars Lindsay Crouse as Dr. Lorna James and Brad Hall as Dr. Toby Sealey, a pair with a past, along with Susannah Hoffman and Mickey Solis as the volunteers who may have a future. Both relationships contribute talking points on either side of the discourse that fuels the drama, but the playwright leaves enough doubt to allow the viewer to wrestle with the conclusion.
