The St. Louis Shakespeare Festival announced today that Tony, Emmy and Grammy award-winner André De Shields will star in King Lear as part of its 21st summer of free Shakespeare in Forest Park. The production marks the theater's return to live outdoor performance, one of the first scheduled in the country.

The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia presents the inimitable, genre-defiant music of Bobby McFerrin on February 17, 2019, at 7pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. The concert will feature Gimme5 - McFerrin's newest band comprised of veterans from his a cappella Voicestra group Joey Blake, Dave Worm, Rhiannon, and Judi Vinar - and local choral ensemble musica intima. The program will be based on Circlesinging, a musical practice and philosophy that McFerrin has been honing since he began as a solo a cappella performer, assigning vocal parts to his onstage collaborators and audience members - transforming sold-out houses into glorious impromptu choirs.

In an extraordinary life that grappled with racial tensions, interracial liaisons, personal scandals and politics, lyric tenor Roland Hayes (1887 – 1977), was the first African American man to reach international fame as a concert performer and one of the few artists who could sell out Carnegie Hall and other major venues.  Once called the “Black Caruso,” Hayes was also hailed as one of the greatest performers of the 20th century.  On October 4, critically acclaimed baritone Robert Sims will honor Hayes with a concert featuring African American spirituals, arranged by Hayes and narrated by George Shirley, in conjunction with his latest recording Robert Sims Sings the Spirituals of Roland Hayes.

New York City Opera will celebrate the opening of its 2010 Spring Season on Thursday, March 18, with a gala performance of Emmanuel Chabrier's glittering, comic L'Étoile, followed by a grand evening on the Promenade of the David H. Opera at the Schomburg is the first in a series of three new collaborative programs co-presented by New York City Opera and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Following the success of Black History at New York City Opera, last season's inaugural series of events co-presented by New York City Opera and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, City Opera returns to the Schomburg Center in 2010 for three new collaborative programs celebrating the great American operatic repertoire highlighting the African-American experience, the distinguished African-American artists who have enriched the opera world, and City Opera and Schomburg's parallel commitment to promoting black culture. The series begins with Opera at the Schomburg on Monday, February 1, 2010, followed by A Tribute to Robert McFerrin on Saturday, March 6, 2010 and 'The Life and Times of Malcolm X' on Wednesday, May 12, 2010.
