Review Roundup: What Did Critics Think of THE DOCTOR?

The Doctor is Robert Icke's final production in his role as Associate Director of the Almeida as he departs to pursue freelance projects. Let's see what the critics had to say.

BWW Review: THE DOCTOR, Almeida Theatre

Robert Icke, an associate director at the Almeida for the past six years, bids farewell in typically bold and epic fashion with his latest contemporary update. Arthur Schnitzler's Professor Bernhardi, which premiered in 1912, has been skilfully reconfigured as an interrogation of 2019's preoccupation with 'identity'.

BWW Review: MACHINAL, Almeida Theatre

Machinal, written by Sophie Treadwell, is based on the sensational 1927 trial of Ruth Snyder, a housewife who murdered her husband. It is a play largely about a woman attempting to find her own agency, with little success, despite the restraints of being a wife and mother. While the Almeida production boasts a wonderful set and the modern relevancy is clear, it ultimately falls short of its source material.

BWW Review: THE GREAT WAVE, National Theatre

This new play is a dramatic account of families divided by the sea. Teenager Hanako is apparently swept out to sea one stormy night, but her fate lies not in the ocean but in the hands of the North Korean regime. Can the belief and determination of her mother, sister and friend mean all hope is not lost…?

Photo Flash: First Look at National Theatre's THE GREAT WAVE

On a Japanese beach, teenage sisters Hanako (Kirsty Rider) and Reiko (Kae Alexander) are caught up in a storm. Reiko survives while Hanako is lost to the sea. Their mother (Rosalind Chao), however, can't shake the feeling that her missing daughter is still alive, and soon family tragedy takes on a global political dimension. Set in Japan and North Korea, Francis Turnly's epic new thriller is directed by Artistic Director of the Tricycle Theatre Indhu Rubasingham in a co-production with the Tricycle Theatre.
