Undermain Theatre announces the 2023 recipient of the Katherine Owens/Undermain Fund for New Work, supporting theater artists in creating thought-provoking new works for the American stage.

Celebrating 40 years of light underground with a landmark anniversary season, Undermain Theatre will present its 40th season of cutting edge performance in September. Our season, from the fall of 2023 to the summer of 2024, will be a season of unlimited boundaries and will find us working both with long time collaborators as well as artists and voices new to the Undermain.

Undermain Theatre has announced the 2022 recipient of $10,000 from the Katherine Owens/Undermain Fund for New Work to playwright and poet Brian Dang for their ongoing work and to commission the future production of their play, This time for the Undermain stage.

Undermain Theatre welcomes you to the world premiere of Feeding on Light by Lenora Champagne. This play is based on the playwright’s personal relationship and discussions with Undermain Theatre’s late Founding Artistic Director Katherine Owens, to whom the play is dedicated.

Undermain Theatre presents Lonesome Blues, Akin Babatundé and Alan Govenar’s solo-performer meditation on the life and songs of Blind Lemon Jefferson: born blind, but ultimately able to express his deepest emotions through music.

Undermain Associate Artistic Director Danielle Georgiou, PH.D. will be stepping down from the associate position she has held at Undermain for the past three years, effective August 1st, 2022, in order to pursue other opportunities. 

For its 39th season Undermain Theatre is returning to a full season of professional live performances with a diverse array of exciting productions to inspire and enrich the live theater experience in Dallas.

Due to schedule conflicts, Undermain Theatre’s production of Lonesome Blues, Akin Babatundé and Alan Govenar’s solo-performer meditation on the life and songs of Blind Lemon Jefferson, is now being rescheduled from June to this coming September. 

The Festival will feature readings by local playwrights, Parker Davis Gray, Erin Malone Turner, and Zander Pryor, along with Native American performance artist and activist Gregg Deal. Mr. Deal is the second recipient of The Katherine Owens/Undermain Theatre Fund for New Work and will close out the festival with his solo performance piece, The Punk Pan Indian Romantic Comedy. A selection of Mr. Deal's paintings and other work will be on display in our lobby as well. 

In commemoration of the birthdate of founding Artistic Director Katherine Owens, Undermain Theatre is pleased to announce the second commission of $10,000 from the Katherine Owens/ Undermain Fund for New Work.

For their 38th season at Undermain they are creating an exciting array of diverse performance opportunities to inspire and enrich our community and support artists in North Texas. They hope to be able to offer live performances in addition to the virtual streaming videos for each production. 

In celebration of the birthdate of Katherine Owens, the Undermain Theatre has announced the inaugural commission of $10,000 from the Katherine Owens/Undermain Fund for New Work: a collaboration with playwright Lenora Champagne of her new play, Feeding on Light, an exploration of the life and influence of French philosopher Simone Weil.

At Undermain, we're planning for the future. For our 37th year of cutting-edge performances, Undermain is pleased to announce the season of the feminine hero. Plays about women will comprise the four central productions that make up the season.

Undermain Theatre presents Whither Goest Thou America: a new work festival.

On Friday, December 20 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 21 at 8:00 p.m., jazz star Tony DeSare and Broadway star Capathia Jenkins join The New York Pops' annual holiday celebration, ringing in the most wonderful time of the year.

Bruce DuBose, Producing Artistic Director, and Undermain's Board of Trustees would like to share the creation of a legacy fund to honor our late Artistic Director, Katherine Owens. Named the Katherine Owens a?" Undermain Fund for New Work, this fund will support Undermain's ongoing 36-year commitment to developing and producing new work.

Undermain Theatre presents an exhibition of Founding Artistic Director, Katherine Owen's art. Katherine Owens was a well-respected artist and director to all she collaborated with in the international theatre community.  In addition to Katherine's directing career, she was also an avid painter and photographer and journal keeper.  The paintings, drawings, photographs and writings on display will showcase the depth of research and experience that Katherine brought to the art she created through her work at Undermain. 

Theater visionary, artist, founding artistic director of Dallas's Undermain Theatre and Texas Woman of distinction Katherine Owens has died after a five-month prolonged illness. She was 61 and lived in Dallas with her husband and artistic partner Bruce DuBose.
