Guys and Dolls marked Kim Donovan's directorial debut 27 years at the Players Guild of Dearborn. She was pregnant at the time with her daughter, Maura. Frank Loesser's score must have channeled Maura's musical theatre talents in utero as she's now starring as Adelaide, "the well-known fiancee," in the Players Guild of Dearborn's 2018 production of Guys and Dolls serendipitously directed by Kim Donovan.
Main Street is sizzling with the opening production of Theatre Arlington's 46th season, 9 to 5 The Musical. This witty and delightful musical is based on the 1980 hit movie, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, one of the original screenwriters. The unlikeliest of friends, Violet, Judy and Doralee, combine forces to take control of their company and their egotistical boss, intent on keeping them and every other woman "in their place." As their plan spins wildly out of control, these women unite to seek their sweet revenge, but in so doing - shatter the stereotypes and find true friendship, independence and prove there is nothing they can't do. What a way to make a living!

Now on stage at The Players' Guild of Dearborn is the wonderful musical comedy SPAMALOT. Set sometime in the early middle ages, this highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian Legend is bursting with wit. The opening act is theatre of the absurd in all its glory, when the villagers mistake the word Finland for England, and begin dancing and singing some outrageous 'slap the mayor in the face with a big fish' routine. Having Finnish blood, and Anglo-Scandinavian heritage, in general, I found this twisted plot deliciously insane, because I know people who would actually get the two places confused, and others who believe Scandinavians toss fish around at celebrations. Well, maybe some Scandinavians do, but that's another story all unto itself.
