Review: Meow Meow Sets Carnegie Hall on Fire with Laughter


This reviewer was completely overwhelmed by the tornado of talent that is Meow Meow. Their show MEOW MEOW, SEQUINS AND SATIRE, DIVAS AND DISRUPTORS: THE WILD WOMEN OF THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC on March 23, 2024 was hot and hysterical.

The 48th season of the popular Highlights In Jazz continues on March 19, 2020, when producer Jack Kleinsinger presents 'Ellington Everlasting.' The concert turns the spotlight on the maestro's timeless compositions and enduring legacy, through the dynamic vision of featured performers like trombonist Art Baron & The Duke's Men, drummer Bernard Purdie, bassist Bill Crow, saxophonists Bill Easley and Mark Hynes, pianist James Weidman and vocalist Ira Hawkins. In keeping with the beloved HIJ tradition, a surprise special guest will be on hand for the concert, to be held at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center.

Composer, arranger, and conductor, David Berger, is recognized internationally as a leading authority on the music of Duke Ellington and the Swing Era. Conductor and arranger for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra from its inception in 1988 through 1994, Berger has transcribed more than 750 full scores of classic recordings, including more than 500 works by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Several of these transcriptions in addition to a number of original arrangements are featured in last season's Broadway hit, After Midnight.

 Innovator, music pioneer, composer and pianist Chick Corea pairs with the incomparable king of American jazz orchestras, Jazz at Lincoln Center Or chestra in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall for a powerhouse concert on March 25, 2018. Since embarking on a solo career in 1966, Corea has been at the forefront of jazz, both as a renowned pianist forging new ground as an innovative electric ke yboardist with his acoustic jazz bands Return to Forever, the Elektric Band, and now, the electro / acoustic Vigil.

He holds tenure with the BCJO and has performed with artist to include the David Murray Baltimore Big Band, Frankie Ruiz, Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra, the Whitt Williams Big Band, The Four Tops, The Impressions, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, and others. He studied with Alex Norris, Tim Murphy, Gary Thomas, Michael Formanek, Paul Bollenback, Russell Thomas, Robert Blaine, and Darcie Bishop.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) comprises 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today. The orchestra makes a return to the Marcus Center's Uihlein Hall on Wednesday, October 11 at 7:30 pm.

Smuin's Annual Gala Celebrates 23rd Season


Leaders in the arts and civic communities packed The Galleria for what became a sizzling evening celebrating one of the nation's most innovative and entertaining arts organizations at Smuin's Annual Gala. Co-chairs Patti and Jerry Hume, and Athena and John Konstin hosted the sparkling event, starring the Smuin dancers. The festive evening included a cocktail reception on the center's terrace, after which guests were seated on the main floor for a delectable dinner catered by McCall's with wines by Grgich Hills Estate. The Smuin dancers hit the stage, performing dazzling works created by Val Caniparoli and Michael Smuin that brought down the house. Held Sunday, March 19 at The Galleria at the San Francisco Design Center, the Gala raised more than $455,000, setting a new record for funds raised in support of Smuin's spectacular programming.
