In April, New Conservatory Theatre Center will present the West Coast premiere of C. Julian Jiménez’s profane and profound Locusts Have No King.

What could have been a cute, bittersweet May-December romcom is transformed into a transcendent homage to the lost art of oral history by the thoughtful script of Pulitzer Prize and two-time Tony nominee Martin Sherman and an exceptionally moving performance by Donald Currie. Gently Down the Stream intelligently speaks to a generation of gay men lucky enough to have survived the carnage of our pasts and reinforces the fact that we did survive, will always remember, but must move on. Theatre this moving comes around rarely folks, so this is a must-see.

In December, New Conservatory Theatre Center closes out 2021 with a bang with the premiere of iconic playwright Martin Sherman's Gently Down the Stream. Touchingly earnest and deeply witty, this epic play is a surprising and constantly evolving love story that crosses generations.

Generations collide when a woman pays a surprise visit to the New York apartment of her late son's partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son. As she revisits the past, she begins to see the life her son might have led. Berkeley Repertory Theatre will conclude its 48th season with Richard Bean's internationally acclaimed One Man, Two Guvnors, a sassy update of Carlo Goldoni's classic knee-slapper, The Servant of Two Masters. Set in 1963 Brighton, England, One Man, Two Guvnors is a brilliantly delicious mash-up of splendid comedy, British pantomime, and music-hall revues. The uproarious plot features a disarming and doltish Francis Henshall who finds himself trapped by farce into working for two bosses - who are connected in wildly improbable ways. He just has to keep them from discovering each other. Inspired insanity, high-low antics, and nimble wordplay ensue - all backed by live musicians paying homage to rockabilly and a certain Fab Four. Directed by David Ivers - artistic director of the Utah Shakespeare Festival - and with songs by Grant Olding, One Man, Two Guvnors is a riotous blast complete with a colorful cast of characters in a topsy-turvy world of love triangles and mistaken identities.
