Caryl Churchill's ground-breaking 1982 work comes to the National for the first time - and, also a first, with a full cast rather than actors doubling up, as the playwright had originally intended. It adds to the expansive feel of Lyndsey Turner's production, particularly effective in the play's still audacious opening.

From Arthur Miller and Caryl Churchill to Don Quixote and zombie gore, here are some of this month's most eye-catching openings. Upon being discharged from the Marine Corps, Isaac (Arthur Darvill) goes back home only to find an anarchically ruled household at hand of his mother (Ashley McGuire). Fed up with domestic patriarchy, Paige seized the opportunity given by her abusive husband Arthur (Andy Williams) having a stroke to turn the tables and start making the rules. She built an ally in her transsexual son Max (Griffyn Gilligan), who helps her to keep tight hold on the reins. Isaac is forced to come to terms with a reality he doesn't recognise as his own.
Casting is announced today for the UK premiere of Hir, written by Taylor Mac (24-Decade History of Popular Music) and directed by Nadia Fall (Disgraced). Arthur Darvill (Doctor Who, Broadchurch, Once) will play Isaac, Griffyn Gilligan (Teddy Ferrara) plays younger sibling Max, Ashley McGuire (Shopping and F***ing, The Suicide) will play their mom Paige and Andy Williams (The 39 Steps, War Horse) plays her husband Arnold.
It's been twenty years since Mark Ravenhill's notoriously titled Shopping and F**king was first staged at the Royal Court.
In his foreword for the Lyric Hammersmith's anniversary production, Ravenhill describes the show's scandalous reputation - and its actual reception. 1996 audiences may have been - largely - ready to nod seriously at plays highlighting such 'issues', but this production, directed by Sean Holmes, seems aimed at a broader demographic than just the theatrical intelligentsia.
The Lyric Hammersmith today announces full casting for Shopping and f**king. Alex Arnold will be playing Robbie, Ashley McGuire will be playing Brian, David Moorst will be playing Gary, Sam Spruell will be playing Mark, Sophie Wu will be playing Lulu.

Twenty years since its explosive premiere, Olivier Award-winning director Sean Holmes brings Mark Ravenhill's provocative first play, Shopping and f**king back to the stage. With a raw mixture of black humour and bleak philosophy, the play follows three disconnected young adults whose lives havebeen reduced to a series of transactions in an emotionally shrink wrapped world. A place whereShopping is sexy and f**king is a job.
