BWW Review: More than neon lights shine at DCPA's XANADU

Most musical theatre fans would probably agree the movie-musical Xanadu isn't the finest. You've got Olivia Newton-John in as a Greek muse in legwarmers and roller skates, on Earth to help a struggling artist build a roller disco. It's campy at best with some standout songs, visually fun but a reasonable flop.

BWW Review: THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED) [REVISED] at Human Race Theatre Company

Skip the nunnery!  Instead, get thee to the Human Race Theatre Company for their production of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED) [REVISED].

HRTC Closes Its 31st Season With (More Or Less) The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare

This June, The Human Race Theatre Company (HRTC) is celebrating the Bard with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]. Get ready for a show like no other. It's an irreverent, roller-coaster ride with the Bard that will leave you breathless with laughter as three incredibly talented actors take on all 38 of his plays in just 97 minutes… with a good amount of creative editing. Part improve-run-amok, part audience participation, all delightfully absurd, this merry mashup leaves no funny bone untickled and features a comic troupe lead by one of Ohio's finest Shakespearean actors, Human Race Resident Artist Bruce Cromer.

BWW Review: You Won't Feel Like a Wallflower at DCPA's WILD PARTY

I think I'm addicted to immersive theatre, especially the way Denver Center's Off-Center has been bringing it. Their most recent production is a fully realized musical The Wild Party, a jazzy show set in the Roaring Twenties, where audience members can sip their gin alongside the performers. You're even encouraged to dress up in your best flapper attire.

The Human Race to Stage Midwest Premiere of TAKING SHAKESPEARE, 4/16-5/3

The Human Race continues its 28th season as Dayton's leading professional theatre with the Midwest premiere of Canadian playwright John Murrell's lesson in self-discovery, Taking Shakespeare. When a longtime, disillusioned college professor is asked to tutor her dean's son through his freshman Shakespeare class, she finds it to be as much a test for her as it is for him. Although they seem to have nothing in common, as they explore the Bard's Othello together, they learn more about each other-and themselves-than either is ready to admit. While they draw strength from the play, they come to understand what it means to live up to expectations. The production runs April 16 - May 3, 2015 at The Loft Theatre.
