Another busy week!
Cabaret is a juggernaut.
Poor Heart of Rock n Roll. People seem to be enjoying it but it's getting no traction.
So many plays are killing it this year. Wow for An Enemy of the People and Uncle Vanya.
Hell's Kitchen, The Great Gatsby and Water For Elephants still looking ok right now. On the other hand, Suffs, The Outsiders and The Notebook continue to be meh. They need lots of Tony noms. It feels like The Outsiders is losing some early momentum.
I'm surprised the average ticket for Stereophonic is still so low.

Will HoR&R even make it the next two weeks?
Cabaret also had a big party in the middle of the week! And Great Gatsby not hitting 100% seems surprising given its trend. And I see ads for that show literally everywhere.

Ouch to both Heart of R&R and Lempicka for under 50/tickets! So much papering at Lempicka.
Any guesses to Gatsby's nut?
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Stereophonic’s average ticket is low because of all the people who bought the $40 Rear Mezz tickets during its preview run. It will look a bit similar next week too, and then jump significantly once it opens.
Heart of Rock & Roll is in serious trouble. They waited far too long to do any meaningful promotion, and by the time they did, it was already too late. The cheap rush/preview options have been nice, but a theatre full of low cost/papered tix does not a long-running show make.
Speaking of papered, yikes Lempicka. 95% full and a $43 avg ticket with a drop in sales? I won’t be surprised if this folds before summer if there’s not a FAST turnaround. Matt Gould can be in his feels online all he wants, but it’s not just the critics who aren’t seeing it for this show.

I saw Heart of Rock n Roll performed its title song on Good Morning America this morning. It is opening next Monday so fingers crossed for mostly good/positive reviews.

Here’s hoping, Wick3! I saw HR&R during first preview and had a GREAT time. It’s a fun jukebox musical, to be sure. I think of critics view this with a similar attitude to & Juliet, then it will critically be alright.

I feel like so many of us are overestimating word of mouth since theaters reopened. If no one’s seeing most of the newer musicals or even following them on social media, how can any buzz spread?

Depends on the show. I think a show like Shucked did as well as it did due to word of mouth (and a savvy marketing team)

Heart of Rock n Roll (even if it gets raves) and Lempicka will both be gone very quickly. Neither have any advance.
The Great Gatsby and Water For Elephants might look ok, but there nut each week is high.
Hell's Kitchen, Suffs both need strong reviews to survive.
The Outsiders and The Notebook are in trouble.

I miss the days when "Chicago" could find effective celebrity Velmas. Does anyone come to mind as a possible Velma?

The imminent Tony nominations and then the awards themselves will probably cause producers to keep these struggling shows on life support, but I imagine if there isn't a good showing for a number of these shows come 4/30, we'll see a bunch of closing notices.
But yikes, Heart of RnR and Lempicka's average ticket prices are basically rush ticket prices. I don't see any scenario in which they can hold on for more than a few weeks.

Most of the new shows will probably close shortly after the Tonys, and an all-time ratings low won’t help matters either.

In regards to "HK and Suffs needing good reviews"...
Question - in a year where the "industry" is hurting and trying to still bounce back, what role do we think critics should play? Every show this season, whether fairly or unfairly or whether you agree or disagree, has not gotten a lot of support from critics. Do we think the critics are hurting the new shows with their reviews, and writing which is clearly intentionally avoiding the ability to have 'pull quotes'?
I just think back to the raves Mama Mia got in a post 9/11 world. The critics and the city rallied together to support Broadway. I think we can all agree Mama Mia did not deserve raves it received (nothing against anyone involved, certainly some talented people working on it),
While I personally don't think its the critics jobs to try to support or encourage ticket sales, overall, I feel the major publications have done much more harm than good this season.

Well, here’s the thing: the critics have not been out of step with much of the word of mouth. In fact, there’s been cases where reviews have been glowing but audiences still didn’t come (Wine and Roses, Here Lies Love). So I’m not sure that critics grading on a massive curve and giving juicy pull quotes will help.
and frankly, considering the marketing we’ve been seeing of Broadway the last couple years, I’m not sure productions would even know how to spin gold into gold.

Agreed. I think critics would love to rally around a couple shows like they did with Kimberly and, to a lesser extent, Shucked last year. But the critics are mostly aligning with word of mouth and audience interest. There is no Mamma Mia where the critics are like meh but the audiences are like GIMME GIMME GIMME (see what I did there). Each show has its fans of course and most would agree that each show has some things to offer but there's nothing that has fully put it together this season among the new musicals.

I fly in from Australia at least once a year, basically nothing in that new crop of musicals makes me want to bring my trip forward, and there in lies the problem. I’m a huge fan ( last trip in February 8 shows in five days ) This season why over stuffed nothing thrills me. For the casual visitor I’m guessing it’s the same. I saw Cabaret first preview in London, if I hadn’t that might have got me back.
I’ll wait to the fall when Sunset arrives.

Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.

Next Broadway season might also look to be rather vanilla to the non-diehards (in terms of new musicals). I’d take a fairly conventional guess that the next new musical to gain any kind of traction in NY will probably be Purple Rain.

I don't know the weekly nut but capacity means very little if they're doing lots of papering/discounts.

I'm not really seeing much of an issue for Outsiders as it currently stands. They just exited previews this past Thursday, and while the critical reception is decidedly mixed, the word of mouth has been pretty strong; the seats are selling well, and the grosses continue to climb. This show has the makings of a summer hit with tourists.
