I just received an email from Show-Score that they're discontinuing their Member Nights (basically comp tickets given so members can review shows) and paid memberships effective immediately.

I'm guessing this has something to do with the fact that TodayTix acquired them so they're looking to sell tickets for actual money instead of a reservation fee. Now it doesn't seem like there's much need for the site any longer and it'll probably just die off.

This reflects the trend I've been noticing lately that there's less and less on papering sites so curious to see what happens now that one of the big names has gone away.

Original email below...

To our valued members,

Show-Score was started with a commitment to foster a community that democratizes critique and to connect people with shows they’ll love - feats that have been achieved in a way that only our community could accomplish.

As we continually strive to further Show-Score’s mission and chart an exciting path into 2024, we've made the difficult decision to step away from member nights and our paid membership program.

We understand that this news may come as a surprise, however, this marks an exciting new chapter for Show-Score. We and the TodayTix team are working behind the scenes on new ways to discover shows and share memorable experiences at the theatre. We would be thrilled to receive your continued support, and for you to keep doing what you’re doing – sharing your reviews, helping others discover shows they’ll love, and in turn, getting the early scoop on the best shows of the season!

As a thank you for all of your support, we will be refunding all membership fees charged between October 1, 2023, through today. Please allow our team up to 2 weeks to action your refund. Your membership will be canceled by our team today, there is nothing you need to do.

If you have an order for an upcoming member night, rest assured that your member night will be going ahead as planned.

If you have Show-Score credits on your account, we will convert your credits into a TodayTix voucher and add an additional 15% for you to use & catch a wide range of shows (which we’ll want to read your reviews about!) - please allow our team up to 2 weeks to email your TodayTix voucher to you.

Figured something was up, the pickins had been pretty slim lately.

This is a classy move:

This is a huge loss to be honest. I've seen many great things for next to nothing with this program.

Im hoping this means more will be on Playbyplay. That being said, a lot of the theatre companies that would normally paper have been selling well this season. St Anne’s warehouse, playwrights Horizon, MTC

How have the offerings been in the past year at PlayByPlay? That one's a little pricier than others ($115 to join + $4.50 per-ticket service fee)

I think it's also unfair to have someone using this if they're also a so-called "theater influencer" or whatever. If they're already getting invites to things for next to nothing and they're still using this? Kind of unfair isn't it?

It’s been slim pickings there as well. I recently got all the devils are here, make me gorgeous, play goes wrong, shark is broken, rock and roll man. Last season I got Camelot, bad Cinderella, cost of living, thanksgiving play, ain’t no mo, downstate and every show at PH, the doctor, love (the armory). Hopefully it picks up this season.

I'm very sorry about the Show-Score. (For some reason, I haven't gotten an email.) So many of the shows I've been have in the past couple of years been courtesy of the site, and I paid for the $10.99 access. That was a great value, and I'll really miss it.

My understanding, based on what the pricing often was, is member nights felt like a slightly more discounted tier than rush, as opposed to straight up comps.

Like if it a ticket costs $20 or more, that's more than just a convenience fee regardless of what they called it. I think members nights for shows like Leopoldstadt and Bad Cinderella were in that range.

There was a large crossover in shows Show-Score and Play-By-Play offered tickets to, so I never got tickets through Show-Score.

Exactly, paying $40 for two "free" Broadway tickets was simply extortion. That money sadly didn't go into the theater but into the Todaytix business.  They seriously think people will continue to give reviews on that website for free, in today's world where we are expected to be appropriately compensated for our time?

The big difference between the showscore "member nights" and rush is that for rush, most of the ticket money goes to the production. For a member night, those are provided to ShowScore to paper the house (or as part of a advertising partnership package), so that whole $15 fee goes to ShowScore.

To that end, the reason why titles are usually similar across the papering services is because those are the shows that need to fill seats and the producers have opted to paper.

I hope they just integrate Show-Score ratings into the TodayTix app, because I don't see any reason to review or use Show-score otherwise. The last show I saw as a member night was terrible honestly so maybe this is a blessing. I left at intermission because it was barely fit as a school production, nevermind an Off-Broadway production. TodayTix is annoying to use too so maybe they're a good pair or whatever.

When Today Tix came into the picture it was to either take the membership list or just put Show-Score out. And that is what they essentially have done. There is a big difference n the price point of tickets from Show Score and tickets bought thru Today's Tix. It is part of their business plan. Remember when Rush and Lotteries took place at the theater? Today Tix is now the exclusive manager of many theaters' rush/lottery services. And they add fees on when you win. Consolidating and putting out the smaller sites. What are theaters going to be doing when they need some people in the seats? This has obviously been in the works for a while. And Today Tix wants the show score membership to follow them - that is why they are refunding membership costs back 3 months. They want to buy the good will for whatever they roll out next.

Hopefully they go to Playbyplay. I’d also like to add to my list, I’ve seen a number of shows at the mintzi Newhouse in there including flex, gardens of annuncia, and epiphany. I’ve seen a number of things at roundabout the refugee plays, 1776. I saw how I learned to drive from mtc. The big apple circus, I can get it for you wholesale was up for one or two performances but I didn’t get a ticket on time. So I definitely think it’s worth it even if the last few months has been dry.

dearalanaaaa: hope they just integrate Show-Score ratings into the TodayTix app…

They have. Just a week or so ago I noticed that Today Tix added another tab called “reviews” along with “info” and “venue” on each show’s page.  I clicked on it and there was one of my recent reviews from Show Score along with about four others. At the bottom of that page there’s a link to “view all reviews” which takes you to all the others on Show Score.  Show Score will probably go away and all will be incorporated into TT.

The other weird thing I noticed over the past few weeks is that they eliminated the off Broadway icon for Hell’s Kitchen and moved all of its reviews over to the Hell’s Kitchen Broadway tab.  Yet they left the Off Broadway Kimberly Akimbo reviews alone.

I’m okay if they want to monetize my review but we need to be getting comparable goodies.  I also hope they keep the historical database. One reason I liked SS is that it worked like my digital theater album. If TT removes closed shows, that history is gone along with my digital scrapbook so to speak.

Thanks for this info, Melissa25. Like you, I used Show-Score as my online theater scrapbook. I wonder if there's any way to download it. I'll email to ask (if there's anyone still there).

I wondered about Hell's Kitchen also, and I emailed about that. The Show-Score person said that they made the decision to just have one listing for Hell's Kitchen, encompassing both the Off Broadway and Broadway productions. I thought that was odd, but didn't pursue it.

I heard back from Show-Score about downloading our reviews. The short answer is no:

We truly appreciate you reaching out to us. It's not possible to download your reviews and there's no need to do that, since you can still access your account. We & the TodayTix team remain committed to continue providing you with exceptional experiences and benefits as a member of our community.
Rest assured that who we are at our core - a community of people who love & want to support theatre - isn’t going away. Show-Score is still a way for you to:
Discover new shows
Keep a scrapbook of your theatre memories
Read reviews from & connect with other theatre fans
Earn badges and a place on our Leaderboard
Follow other avid theatre fans to discover more about the shows resonating with them
And more!

We appreciate your understanding as we enter this new chapter, and are excited for the new opportunities and benefits we’ll be able to bring you & the rest of our Show-Score community in the future.

It looks like my Water for Elephants review was removed, along with all the other reviews posted during previews. This changes their average score and removes any signs of a score lower than 70.

Also, they moved my off Broadway review of Hell’s Kitchen to the Broadway production, so if I see it on Broadway it won’t be an updated review of the current production.

I am a fan of Show Score and TodayTix which acquired them. It seems like some of their decisions aren’t transparent. I hope they can keep their business decisions separate in the future.
