The Public Theater production of Hell’s Kitchen, a new musical featuring the songs of Alicia Keys, will transfer to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre beginning March 28 in advance of an April 20 opening.

With a score made up of Keys hits like “Girl on Fire,” “Fallin’,” and “Empire State of Mind,” Hell’s Kitchen has a book by Kristoffer Diaz, direction by Michael Greif, and choreography by Camille A. Brown. The coming-of-age musical is loosely inspired by Keys’s teenage years living in the federally subsidized Times Square apartment complex Manhattan Plaza and follow 17-year-old Ali as she makes several life-changing discoveries across New York City.

Casting for the Broadway run will be announced at a later date. The Public Theater production is led by Maleah Joi Moon as Ali, alongside Shoshana Bean as Jersey, Brandon Victor Dixon as Davis, Chris Lee as Knuck, Kecia Lewis as Miss Liza Jane, Lamont Walker II as Riq, and an ensemble that includes Chad Carstarphen, Reid Clarke, Chloe Davis, Nico DeJesus, Timothy L. Edwards, Vanessa Ferguson, Crystal Monee Hall, Jackie Leon, Rachelle Manalo, Sarah Parker, Niki Saludez, Mariand Torres, and understudies Badia Farha, Gianna Harris, Onyxx Noel, William Roberson, and Donna Vivino.

The creative team includes Robert Brill (sets), Dede Ayite (costumes), Natasha Katz (lighting), Gareth Owen (sound), Peter Nigrini (projections), Mia Neal (hair and wigs), Adam Blackstone (music supervision and orchestrations), Tom Kitt (orchestrations and music consulting), and Dominic Fallacaro (music direction).

Of the off-Broadway run, our critic called Hell’s Kitchen “easily the best new musical at the Public since Hamilton.” The Public Theater engagement ends on January 14.

I'd assume the entire cast is transferring to Broadway?

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I think this show would have benefitted from another workshop or two, but I guess that won't be happening. I am one of the few people who really didn't like this at the Public. I will probably sit this one out on Broadway.

That opening night calendar for April is getting pretty damn full!

As to my interest level? I'm on the fence. I hear great things about the performances, not the show.

While I realize this is only loosely based on Keyes, I have no real knowledge of her as an artist (I'm 60 and a lot of contemporary artists just aren't my thing in pop music. When does that change happen?) And am not a fan of jukebox musicals. So many shows, so few bank accounts...

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I'm beyond pleased to see Lily Ling book her next Broadway project after How to Dance in Ohio crashed and burned (the press release misspelled her last name). Looks like Dominic Fallacaro decided to stay with & Juliet.

I did not care for this show either. Like at all. I think it’s going to struggle to find an audience and also struggle to fill seats at the Shubert theater. I feel like they should have chosen a smaller theater like the Booth or Music Box. Maybe it’s just me, but we will see.

SPOILER: I call it In the Kitchen because it's basically In the Heights. Even Abuela dies!

The window card art is gorgeous!

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

I enjoyed it off broadway in a small intimate house.

It's a small coming of age story.

I do wish it had an original score.....Alicia is talented enough to write original music for Broadway......

Is the role of Jersey that large for only Shoshana to have a standby or is that something she would have gotten contractually?

I thought it did have original songs. If not, that’s disappointing.

I love Alicia and the cast performance on Jimmy Fallon - makes you wish the entire score was original. She's so talented.

However, do you think press like this is sending the wrong message - it makes it look like Alicia is IN THE SHOW!!!!!!!!

That crossed my mind also. I think she should have just let the cast do the number. There will already be people who didn't see this performance who will think Alicia is in the show.

I am not a big Alicia Keys fan but I did really like that song and it made me want to possibly see the show.

100% agree! It's feels like a very calculated press decision. All they needed to do was have Alicia introduce the number. That being said I thought it played really well and got me interested in the show which til now wasn't really on my radar.
