AUDITION NOTICE: BRIGHT STAR at CHARLESTON LIGHT OPERA GUILD THEATRE

Auditions for Charleston Light Opera Guild's production of Bright Star, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell's five-time Tony-nominated Broadway musical, will be held at the Charleston Light Opera Guild Theatre on April 4th, 7th and 9th, 2019.

Bright Star is an Appalachian themed musical inspired by a true story. Set in North Carolina, the story follows Alice through two different points in her life: first, her young and carefree days growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains and then her years as a well-off magazine editor in Asheville, nearly 22 years later. A young writer named Billy joins Alice's paper, The Asheville Southern Journal, and soon Alice discovers that her and Billy share a mysterious connection. Intrigued, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past.

Academy Award, Grammy and Emmy winning actor Steve Martin, well known for his Appalachian folk skills on the banjo, helped pen the story and music alongside Grammy-Award winning songwriter Edie Brickell.

Auditions will be held at the Charleston Light Opera Guild Theatre, located at 411 Tennessee Avenue, Charleston, WV 25302.

Auditions dates and info:

Thursday, April 4th, 2019 at 7:30 PM: Singing Audition - Those auditioning must prepare a vocal selection and bring sheet music for the Guild accompanist.

Sunday, April 7th, 2019: Dancing Audition - Those auditioning must be prompt and come dressed to dance. Musical combinations will be taught.

Tuesday, April 9th, 2019: Reading Audition - Scripts will be providing to those auditioning.

Roles Available:

Alice Murphy - lead; mezzo-soprano; strong singer; 30s-40s; plays Alice at age 16 and age 38; editor of the southern literary magazine; attractive and adventurous

Billy Cane - lead; baritone/tenor; 20s; a soldier returning home from WWII; dance ability a plus

Jimmy Ray Dobbs - lead; baritone/tenor; 30-35; also plays Jimmy in his 20s; handsome; charming

Mayor Josiah Dobbs - supporing lead; baritone/bass; mid 50s-60s; political powerhouse

Margo Crawford - supporting lead; soprano; folk voice; early 20s; small town bookstore owner

Daryl Ames - supporting role; comedic timing actor/singer; baritone; mid 20s-40s

Mama Murphy - featured role; mezzo-soprano; 50s-60s; center of her family; protector of her daughter

Daddy Murphy - featured role; baritone; 50s-60s; authoritative & stern disciplinarian; farmer; religious

Daddy Cane - featured role; baritone/tenor; 50s-60s; a warm, loving country man

Lucy Grant - featured role; strong belt; 20s-30s; dance ability a plus; dynamic and sexy; leads a production number

Additional characters of Max, Florence, Edna, Stanford, Dr. Norquist, Government Clerk and young Daddy Cane from ensemble

Ensemble of singers and dancers of various ages for folk-pop and bluegrass styles

Nina Denton Pasinetti will serve as Director and Choreographer. David Patrick will be the Musical Director and Conductor and Tom Pasinetti will be the Technical Director.

Show Dates are June 14th - 16th, 21st - 23rd and 28th-30th, 2019 at the Charleston Light Opera Guild Theatre.
