Doug Varone and Dancers returns to the Center, bringing a program brimming with the vitality of highly charged choreography which also touches the human heart. The program will feature Somewhere (2019), Short Story (2001), Nocturne (2017), and Double Octets (2021). Somewhere is set to the orchestral score of Leonard Bernstein’s timeless West Side Story but the well-known story is stripped away. What is left is pure choreographic vibrancy with emotional heft generated by the musical structure. Short Story, with music by Rachmaninoff and Nocturne with music by Chopin, together create a piano suite that reveals the intimate landscape of Varone’s choreographic brilliance. Double Octets, the finale of the program, will leave you breathless as the explosive energy of the combined forces of the talented dancers from the Mason School of Dance and the company take command of the stage.
