I truly feel that in the theater community, I never hear musicians talking about their experiences playing in pit orchestras for musicals (plus, that we just tend to be forgotten at times). Therefore, from time to time I'd like to share my experiences as a percussion student playing in school musicals.

What is a Student Representative? An elected leadership position where a student serves as a voice for the program's students in faculty department meetings and receives student concerns to communicate to the faculty. A program that offers Student Representative positions is a program that strives to serve their students.

Lots of my friends and peers have come to me interested about how I make connections and opportunities for myself, and how they can do the same– this entry is my answer! I’m going to talk about some doors that have recently opened for me and how to kickstart opening them yourself!

Our hearts beat as a unit for a few months. It was so special to start my semester with my cast; they’re a special group who help me remember why I love performing. It leads me back to feeling so hopeful this semester. I have so much to be grateful for.

The concept of not “making it” is understandably terrifying for people who can’t imagine doing anything else but this career. These fears often spiral into comparing yourself with people who are quote-on-quote “successful”, and assuming you’re not talented enough to be like them.

The most important thing is to prioritize yourself and your health, happiness, and well-being. Prioritize what you as a person and a performer need to feel confident and healthy going into a rehearsal, tech week, or performance.

We all know freshman year is scary and new, junior year is the most stressful and academically challenging, and senior year is the one you can relax just a bit; but what about sophomore year? It's the year of being a ‘wise fool’ (the Greek words meaning sophomore) and nobody really tells you what to expect.

To those who are new to my blog, welcome to the start of my tale in second year of musical theatre in the University of Winchester. For those who have been here, welcome back!

In the performing arts industry, I feel as though there is this notion that you always have to be doing something. There is this expectation that you should be constantly working on a new project or toward a new goal. This creates the myth that performers should feel guilty for doing “nothing.” But the truth is, this “nothing” can be just as productive as any “something.”

I have officially arrived at the point in high school that every student anxiously awaits: I am an upperclassman. Doors are opening in the world of the arts, and new opportunities are aplenty.

An insight into the current academic year so far reflecting on my classes and what student have to look forward to as well as that, discusses the highs and lows of returning to class after the Summer Break.

Maintaining academic integrity, at its core, is the practice of putting forth your best effort in every assignment, exam, or other endeavor, and relying on your own abilities and knowledge to be successful. While the application of this idea may change as we go through our academic careers, the general principle stays the same.

Something that I’ve really connected and found solace in over the past few weeks is that college isn’t necessarily about following set guidelines to a degree (although it totally is partially about that) but also in discovering interests and what works in life for me and trusting that sticking with it will get me to where I need to be.

The first few weeks of the semester have been a little stressful, as I am readjusting to having to balance school, theater, and maintaining a social life.

Next year, I’m definitely signing up to be PM again - whatever show it may be - I want to do this again before I graduate. 

Truthfully, that’s how I’m feeling at the moment. I’m wondering how I’m going to make time to do theater, write articles, host events, do homework, while also having midterms right around the corner. While I recognize that studying is important, how can I study for my midterms when there’s still so many things that need to get done?

Every musical theatre program has standout qualities. During my personal audition process of over 30 schools, I witnessed an array of these qualities first hand. Proximity to theatre districts, agent signing statistics, masterclass opportunities, and varying credit requirements are just a few of the qualities that most schools boast. The most appealing quality to me, however, is outstanding faculty.

I try to tell myself that that the stories I have to tell are incredibly important and that I should tell them. And I am learning to believe that. All of our stories deserve to be told and need to be told.

If I were to describe this semester so far in one word, I would say busy, however, I have a sneaking suspicion that that will be my word of choice for EVERY semester.

My favorite time of the school year is coming up! Audition. Season. Woo! In my program we audition for the winter and spring show together. And no matter how your school’s audition progress goes, most people can agree on one thing. We are all nervous. While we do our best to look and feel confident in the room, that does not shake away the jitters in our brains. I’m here to tell you some of my favorite tips and tricks for calming those little audition nerves!

Academic integrity is about a student’s responsibility and honesty with their school work. Of course there is so much more involved with this term, but the main point is that you should be expected to have “Academic integrity”. As I have mentioned before, on many occasions I have felt my motivation for work fade in and fade out. It’s hard to maintain the passion for school work and the academic integrity of it all, but do not let that all disappear completely!
