The 10th annual KC SuperStar kicks into high gear on Monday night, June 3 at 7 p.m. as 20 area high school students* compete in the Semifinals in the coveted singing competition. The Semis will be held in the White Theatre of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, which sponsors the competition.

High school students, parents, friends, arts advocates, celebrities and city officials from all over Texas celebrated as winners and scholarship recipients were announced on Thursday, May 9, at the 8th Annual Dallas Summer Musicals High School Musical Theatre Awards (DSM HSMTA).

The Cape Cod Human Rights Commission recently hosted their Human Rights Academy for high school students, hosted at Cape Cod Academy. Students from 11 of the fourteen public and private high schools on Cape Cod participated. This year the keynote speaker was Hip-Hop Jazz artist, ZYG 808 who performed his song 'Insanity' and delivered a rousing keynote speech on the importance of leveling the social playing field to achieve effective human rights work by recognizing and eradicating the socially engrained elements of white supremacy in our society.

On May 20, three high school students from Fairfield and Westchester County will experience the joy of live theatre in a whole new way - as playwrights. Emilia Getzinger (of Botsford, CT), Grace O'Rourke (of Mamaroneck, NY) and Alexandra Levins (of Westport, CT) were named winners of The Palace Theatre's 2019 Ernie DiMattia Emerging Young Artist Awards for their writing of an original one-act play. All three will witness their voices and visions come to life with a staged reading by professional actors at The Palace in Stamford.

Kenny Leon's True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theatres announce the winners for the 11th Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition National Finals, held on Monday, May 6th at the August Wilson Theatre in New York. The first-place winner was Trajan Clayton from Perry, GA; second-place, Katara Willis from Buffalo, NY; and third place, Abad Viquez from Chicago, IL.

 In an effort to celebrate all talents involved with high school theater productions, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts will present a significantly expanded awards program for its seventh annual Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards at 2 p.m. on May 12 in its Reynolds Hall. With community members encouraged to attend, the event will showcase even more musical theater performances than years past and offer several new awards categories.

In celebration of outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre performances, Broadway In Chicago is thrilled to announce the award recipients of the Eighth Annual Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards (IHSMTA) sponsored by NBC 5: Jacob Simon of Deerfield, IL (Deerfield High School) as BEST ACTOR for his portrayal of Bobby Child in CRAZY FOR YOU and Marguerite Reed of Palos Park, IL (Mother McAuley High School) as BEST ACTRESS for her portrayal of Betty Haynes in IRVING BERLIN'S WHITE CHRISTMAS. Jacob and Marguerite will represent the state of Illinois at The Jimmy Awards (also known as The National High School Musical Theatre Awards ) in New York on June 24, 2019.

 The Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) recognizes individuals who have inspired their students and dedicated themselves to providing quality theatre education with the Inspirational Theatre Educator Award. Veteran theatre educators andEdTA members Richard Fairchild, Rebekah Hess, and Alissa Vogelgesang will each receive this award at EdTA's National Conference.

More than 300 area high school students will perform on the main stage of the Music Hall at Fair Park on Thursday, May 9 as part of the 2019 Dallas Summer Musicals High School Musical Theatre Awards (HSMTA).  Winners will be named in 18 categories that recognize artistic and educational achievements of North Texas students and their high school programs.

Each year, the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) recognizes International Thespian Society (ITS) troupe directors, emeritus members, and other professional members who have dedicated themselves to the cause of theatre education for more than 20 years. The 2019 theatre educators to be inducted into the EdTA Hall of Fame include: James Thomas Bailey of Napa, California; Lynn Jensen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Tony Matthes of Edina, Minnesota; Jennifer Morgan-Beuchat of Leavenworth, Kansas; and Robert Fowler of Chesterfield, Missouri. Ceremonies will take place in New York City at the 2019 EdTA National Conference.

This high-school-musical season, I got a sneak peek at Santa Barbara High's 'Matilda: The Musical,' with a tour of the innovative set. It's a found-art, craftsy manifestation of the outlandish imagination of 'Matilda' author Roald Dahl. If you didn't read Matilda as a child, get ready for an underdog story featuring an extraordinary girl who inspires her fellow classmates to rise against the oppression of their terrifying headmistress, 'The Trunchbull'.

Musical theater students from 21 local high schools are getting exciting news: they'll receive an 'Applause Award' from the Dr. Phillips Center for their performance this year … and they may be selected to represent Central Florida in a national musical theater competition in New York this June.

GLSEN, the leading education organization working to create safe and inclusive K-12 schools for LGBTQ youth, today announced that actor, Wilson Cruz will host the 2019 GLSEN Respect Awards - New York.  Additionally, the annual event will honor Ace Schwarz as Educator of the Year and Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) High School GSA, Spectrum as GSA of the Year.

The Chamber Singers from High Point University, located in High Point, N.C., will perform at Sayville Congregational United Church of Christ on Friday, May 17th at 7:30 PM. The Chamber Singers are the premier vocal ensemble of High Point University.

The Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) recognizes schools whose theatre programs exemplify and promote high standards of quality in educational theatre with the Outstanding School Award. This year only four schools in the nation were honored: James A. Garfield High School in Seattle, Washington; Leavenworth Senior High School in Leavenworth, Kansas; Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane, Washington; and Woodmont High School in Piedmont, South Carolina.

Traveling Players Ensemble trains actors like no other theatre in the DC metro region.  Their programs are innovative, inclusive, and super fun!  And transformative, too. Their mission, to bring great theatre into the great outdoors, means high school actors perform 'Shakespeare in the Park' in Shenandoah National Park while backpacking on the Appalachian Trail.  These actors don't just create a show, but have adventures they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Theatre in Our Schools (TIOS) Month is a campaign to raise public awareness of the impact of theatre education and draw attention to the need for more access to quality programs for all students. While activities may take place any time, March is designated the official month for TIOS.

The 9th Shakespeare School Festival South Africa (SSF SA) got off to an excellent start at the Artscape Arena last month with record audience attendance. The second leg of the annual festival opens at the Baxter Theatre on 13 May. This year the SSF SA is dedicated to the late freedom fighter Sonny Venkatrathnam who smuggled a copy of The Complete Works of Shakespeare onto Robben Island during his incarceration. Tafara Nyatsanza, a SSF alumni, will MC the festival nightly.
