Semifinals For KC SuperStar Set For June 3; 10th Anniversary Of High School Singing Competition

The 10th annual KC SuperStar kicks into high gear on Monday night, June 3 at 7 p.m. as 20 area high school students* compete in the Semifinals in the coveted singing competition. The Semis will be held in the White Theatre of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, which sponsors the competition.

The Cape Cod Human Rights Commission recently hosted their Human Rights Academy for high school students, hosted at Cape Cod Academy. Students from 11 of the fourteen public and private high schools on Cape Cod participated. This year the keynote speaker was Hip-Hop Jazz artist, ZYG 808 who performed his song 'Insanity' and delivered a rousing keynote speech on the importance of leveling the social playing field to achieve effective human rights work by recognizing and eradicating the socially engrained elements of white supremacy in our society.

The Palace Brings Original Works To Life For Local High School Playwrights

On May 20, three high school students from Fairfield and Westchester County will experience the joy of live theatre in a whole new way - as playwrights. Emilia Getzinger (of Botsford, CT), Grace O'Rourke (of Mamaroneck, NY) and Alexandra Levins (of Westport, CT) were named winners of The Palace Theatre's 2019 Ernie DiMattia Emerging Young Artist Awards for their writing of an original one-act play. All three will witness their voices and visions come to life with a staged reading by professional actors at The Palace in Stamford.

The first-place winner was Trajan Clayton from Perry, GA; second-place, Katara Willis from Buffalo, NY; and third place, Abad Viquez from Chicago, IL.

The 2019 theatre educators to be inducted into the EdTA Hall of Fame include: James Thomas Bailey of Napa, California; Lynn Jensen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Tony Matthes of Edina, Minnesota; Jennifer Morgan-Beuchat of Leavenworth, Kansas; and Robert Fowler of Chesterfield, Missouri. This year only four schools in the nation were honored: James A. The 9th Shakespeare School Festival South Africa (SSF SA) got off to an excellent start at the Artscape Arena last month with record audience attendance. The second leg of the annual festival opens at the Baxter Theatre on 13 May. This year the SSF SA is dedicated to the late freedom fighter Sonny Venkatrathnam who smuggled a copy of The Complete Works of Shakespeare onto Robben Island during his incarceration. Tafara Nyatsanza, a SSF alumni, will MC the festival nightly.
