LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR Comes To Theater Basel Theater Basel presents LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR on Friday, Nov. 2.

A bloodstained dress, a knife in her hand, her face drawn by madness. Lucia murdered her husband on the wedding night. She loved someone else and still loves him - the one with whom she sees herself united at the peak of her madness and whom she wants to precede to death: Edgardo. But he is the archenemy of her brother. Against the backdrop of the clashes between Catholics and Protestants in 16th-century Scotland, two families embark on a fierce battle for honor, power and money. Lucia becomes the plaything of this private war. For them, a politically favorable marriage is planned. She agrees to the forced marriage. But the anguish of how she is disposed of, how her humanity is denied her by the plots of her brother,

For this shocking moment of a final liberation act of a woman from the oppressive mechanisms of a family Gaetano Donizetti has composed one of the most captivating aria scenes of nineteenth-century operatic literature. It is precisely this madness scene, which is partly responsible for the breakthrough of Donizetti in the tragic operatic subject at the premiere in Naples in 1835. The French director, actor and author Olivier Py will stage the tragic love story. Py does not shy away from big pictures or big emotions in his sensitive and clever productions. The artistic director of the Festival d'Avignon recently impressed the Basel audience with Verdi's "Macbeth" in the spring of 2016. The musical direction is in the hands of the Italian conductor and belcanto specialist Giampaolo Bisanti. He has already excelled several times with his interpretation of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" - in Tokyo and at the Semperoper in Dresden. In Basel, he will again express his passion for this work and penetrate deep into the musical world of the Schauerromantik.
