THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Will Open in Malmo 18 October
2019 at Malmo Opera

A spoiled prince (played by Fred Johanson) has turned into a beast as a punishment for his rudeness and stinginess. To regain human form, he must learn to love - and deserve to be loved. And he must do it before the time runs out ... To his aid he has all the enchanted inhabitants of the castle.

The Beauty and Beast is based on the Oscar winning cartoon Disney movie from 1991, which in turn is based on a French folk tale. It's a romantic fantasy about looking past a person's exterior and instead seeing her heart.

Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid) wrote music and lyrics to the cartoon. To the stage set, Menken supplemented with additional music, now with the text by Tim Rice. Conductor Josef Rhedin leads Malmö Opera Orchestra through the romantic musical music.

The director Linus Fellbom and the stage designer Dan Potra will once again create a magical and spectacular set. Last they made Dracula at the Royal Opera and here in Malmö they are familiar with Hans and Greta.

A New Musical Star and A Musical Star from West End and Broadway

The title roles are played by Sofie Gunnarsson and Fred Johanson. Sofie has previously sung in the music classic Kristina from Duvemåla at the Gothenburg Opera and Mamma Mia - the Party in Stockholm, a set that played several hundred performances.

Fred Johanson is one of Sweden's largest international musical artists. He has sung great roles such as Jafar in Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theater in London and Max Von Mayerling in Sunset Boulevard in both the West End and Broadway. Here at Malmö Opera we have previously seen him in among others Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Misérables and Evita. Hear Fred make the voice as Jafar in Aladdin in the program Sarah's sound of Musicals!

In the role of Gaston you will see John-Martin Bengtsson who recently played Phantom of the Opera in Denmark. John-Martin Bengtsson been playing Raoul in Stockholm (swing for Phantom) and Raoul at the Operahouse in Gothenburg before that so for the last three years he been playing in Phantom of the Opera.
