When the musical Ragtime was produced for Broadway in 1998 it was a colossal, big-budget show. It cost some ten million dollars. What in the world were the folks at tiny little Union Avenue Opera thinking when they decided to include this show in their twenty-ninth season? Ragtime, the musical treatment of E. L. Doctorow’s vast rambling nostalgic, wonderfully American novel, is far removed from opera.

Old City, Philadelphia opens their 2019-20 season with the winner of the 1998 Tony Awards for Best Score, Book and Orchestrations, RAGTIME. Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Once on This Island, Seussical and Lucky Stiff), noted playwright Terrence McNally, and based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, RAGTIME plays the F. Otto Haas Stage from September 19 through October 20, 2019. Called “a triumph for the stage” by TIME Magazine and “the best musical in twenty years” by the International Herald Tribune, RAGTIME tells the story of three distinct Americans – an upper-class wife, a Jewish immigrant, and a daring Harlem musician – united by their courage, compassion and hope in the future. Under the direction of Artistic Director Curt Columbus, Trinity Rep's production examines how the musical, which is set in 1906, reflects the country's current political and social climate. Based on the celebrated 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow, the musical tackles race, women's rights, immigration, and workers' rights.
