History credits the first modern musical production to the year 1866 and a little-known work called “The Black Crook” that premiered in New York on September 12 of that year. It was credited as the first play that added dance and original music to help tell the story. But after seeing Palm Canyon Theatre’s newest production of “Something Rotten”, maybe the historians have it wrong.

The play is a farcical dark comedy revolving around the Brewster family, descended from the Mayflower settlers but now composed of maniacs, most of them homicidal. The hero, Mortimer Brewster, is a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, murderous family and local police in Brooklyn, New York, as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves, Elaine Harper, who lives next door and is the daughter of the local minister.

After all, the play's the thing! Consulting with a local soothsayer, the Nick Bottom learns that the future of theater will be something called a musical, and sets out to produce the very first one. Hijinks and hilarity ensue.

Mortimer Brewster is living a happy life! He has a steady job at a prominent New York newspaper, he’s just become engaged, and he gets to visit his sweet spinster aunts to announce the engagement. Mortimer always knew that his family had a bit of a mad gene -- his brother believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt and his great-grandfather used to scalp Indians for pleasure -- but his world is turned upside down when he realizes that his dear aunts have been poisoning lonely old men for years! When Mortimer’s maniacal brother, Jonathan. (who strangely now resembles Boris Karloff) returns on the night that the aunts were planning to bury the newest victim, Mortimer must rally to help his aunts and protect his fiancé -- all while trying to keep his own sanity as well. An uproarious farce on plays involving murder, Arsenic and Old Lace has become a favorite amongst regional theatres throughout America.

Brighton Beach Memoirs is part one of Neil Simon's autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states "if you didn't have a problem, you wouldn't be living here."
Performances March 8th thru 17th at the Hilliard Civic and Cultural Arts Center, 5425 Center St, Hilliard, OH, 43026. For performance times and more information visit: http://www.hilliardartscouncil.org/a-christmas-carol/.

Having been summoned home to Denmark from school in Germany to attend his father's funeral, he is shocked to find his mother Gertrude already remarried to his Uncle Claudius, the dead king's brother, who has declared himself the king, though young Hamlet is the actual heir to the crown. Hamlet, rightly, suspects foul play.

A black comedy about white trash! Nominated for over thirty awards during its long run in Los Angeles, Sordid Lives puts a comedic twist on a story of unconditional love, acceptance and 'coming out' in a Texas family. This clever, campy and often raunchy tale is based on Mr. Shores' experiences growing up gay in conservative, rural Texas. The star of the show, Peggy, is actually dead. Sissy, Peggy's sister, is afraid that all the family skeletons will come flying out of the closet all at once as they gather to mourn the family's matriarch. She plays mediator between Peggy's daughters, the conservative Latrelle and the more liberal LaVonda, as well as trying to comfort her neighbors, Noleta and husband, G.W., who is the one that killed Peggy - under extremely humiliating circumstances, no less. And then there is Brother Boy, whose hero is Tammy Wynette. The characters of Sordid Lives aren't afraid of doing things that are off-limits in a family show - having affairs, cross-dressing and stripping to their skivvies. But neither do they shy away from serious themes such as bigotry, guilt, homosexuality, forgiveness and acceptance. Their lives intertwine, giving each a new perspective, honesty, and meaning.
