Pioneering airline pilot Beverley Bass was captain of one of the 39 planes redirected to a small Canadian town in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, a story dramatized in the Broadway hit COME FROM AWAY.

Come From Away has been 2017's little musical that could. Soon after opening at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, the show earned seven Tony nominations (picking up one for director Christopher Ashley), coming as quite a shock to the creative team that has been nurturing the project since the beginning. 'We expected Canadian high schools to do it... and now we're on Broadway,' explained creator David Hein.

Back in October, COME FROM AWAY honored the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador and the 'come from aways' whose lives inspired the new musical with two special benefit concert performances at Gander's hockey arena, The Steele Community Centre. 

Yesterday's edition of THEATER TALK featured playwright Paula Vogel discussing the odyssey of her new play, INDECENT and the cast and creatives of the new Broadway musical, COME FROM AWAY.

Today, NBC special correspondent Tom Brokaw joined TODAY to reveal the real-life incidents that inspired the show and examines how a small Canadian town opened its heart to stranded Americans in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

The cast and the audience at Come From Away got a special treat from up north this evening when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took the stage ahead of the Canadian-born musical to address the audience. Trudeau is in the city to celebrate the show and to attend his first in the Broadway musical.
