TV: ACT ONE's Beowulf Boritt on Taking the 2014 Tony for Best Scenic Design of a Play

Happy Birthday Daphne Rubin-Vega! Rubin Vega is a two-time Tony and Drama Desk nominee and recipient of the Theater World, Obie, Blockbuster awards and was recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her role in Jack Goes Boating. She is perhaps best known for the roles she originated, including Mimi (RENT) and Conchita (Anna in the Tropics), both Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway shows for which she was nominated for the Tony award. She also originated the role of Rahmi (Gum), Sofia (Nilo Cruz' Two Sisters and a Piano), Canary Mary (Suzan-Lori Parks' f**king A, Lucille Lortel nomination) and Lucy (Jack Goes Boating) at the Public Theater, as well as starred in the Broadway revivals of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Magenta) and Les Mis, ('Fantine') and most recently, The New Group's Blood From a Stone ('Yvette') opposite Ethan Hawke.'

The New Group launches its 2013-2014 season with the New York premiere of the Geffen Playhouse production of The Jacksonian, by Pulitzer Prize winner Beth Henley. Directed by Tony Award winner Robert Falls, this production features Ed Harris, Glenne Headly, Amy Madigan, Bill Pullman and Juliet Brett. Opening was Thursday night, November 7, and BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge was there to chat with the whole gang at the after party. Check out what they had to say below!

Today in 2003 Avenue Q opened at the John Golden Theatre, where it ran for 2534 performances. Avenue Q was conceived by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who wrote the music and lyrics. The book was written by Jeff Whitty and the show was directed by Jason Moore. Avenue Q is an 'autobiographical and biographical' coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. It opened Off-Broadway in March 2003, co-produced by The New Group and the Vineyard Theatre, and later won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and spawned Las Vegas and West End productions, two national tours, and a variety of international productions. Currently playing at New World Stages (340 W. 50 St.), today will be declared AVENUE Q DAY by the City of New York in honor of the show's 10th anniversary.

VIDEO: Gazelle's 'R.U.N' Featuring Jogyo and Devi Mambouka

“Run, but don't run away” opens the chorus of this new single, a unique collaboration between South African musician Gazelle, Dither Down mainstay Jogyo and vocalist Devi Mambouka. 3 NYC-based transplants of African descent who have come together to create an invocation to “Change your perspective” and “Face your fears.” The result is “R.U.N”, an acronym of sorts that Jogyo says means “Remember Union Now.” It's an infectious track, which features hypnotic guitar riffs, pounding beats and haunting lyrics. Each artist contributes vocals that highlight their signature styles, while at the same time seamlessly blending together. Click below to watch the video!

Previews began Sunday (February 24) for Tina Benko starring in Jackie, the North American premiere of the play by Nobel Prize winning Austrian Elfriede Jelinek, best known in the United States for her novel The Piano Teacher and the 2001 film based on it. Directed by Tea Alagic from the English translation by Gitta Honegger, Jackie opens Tuesday, March 5, at 7:30pm at Women's Project Theater's new home, New York City Center Stage II, 131 West 55th Street. Off-Broadway's The New Group presents Burning, written by Thomas Bradshaw and directed by Scott Elliott, kicking off the company's 2011-12 Season. The production officially opens on Monday, November 14 at 7:00 PM. Burning plays a limited engagement through December 17 at The New Group @ Theatre Row (The Acorn Theatre, 410 West 42nd Street).
