BWW Review: Finding GOLD as the Met's Ring Cycle Begins Anew
by Richard Sasanow - Mar 11, 2019

If Robert Lepage's production of Wagner's Ring Cycle (formally, DER RING DAS NIBELUNGEN) had worked as smoothly when it opened in 2010 as it did at this season's marvelous premiere of its prologue, DAS RHEINGOLD, on Saturday afternoon, there probably still would have been complaints--not about its focus on technology but on its traditional approach. Personally, i liked it.

BWW Review: PROM 64: VERDI REQUIEM, Royal Albert Hall
by Debbie Gilpin - Sep 1, 2018

A favourite at the Proms since its first inclusion in the programme in 1956, Giuseppi Verdi's tribute to the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni had a standalone performance this week, helmed by conductor Andres Orozco-Estrada. Verdi's Requiem has a strong connection with the Royal Albert Hall, having first been heard there in 1875 - just a year after its debut in Milan's San Marco church. Written for orchestra, double choir and four soloists, it was performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Choir and soloists Lise Davidsen (soprano), Dmytro Popov (tenor), Tomasz Konieczny (bass) and Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano) stepping in for Karen Cargill at short notice.

BWW Review: Canadian Opera Company's ARABELLA Sparkles in Every Way
by Taylor Long - Oct 6, 2017

Swanky sets, shimmering voices, sumptuous costumes - it all sparkles when met with sublime Strauss. The Canadian Opera Company presents the Canadian premiere of ARABELLA, a lyric comedy by Richard Strauss. A co-production with Santa Fe Opera and Minnesota Opera, ARABELLA is sung in German with English surtitles, the libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal still resonating humorously against Strauss' score. Director Tim Albery has created a fine production, where every detail brims with elegance.

BWW Review: Lyric's WOZZECK Stirs the Brain in Cracking Production
by Patrick O'Brien - Nov 12, 2015

Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck is not the first to swirl with immortal themes like power play, lust, betrayal, and death (far, far from it), but thanks to the circumstances of its composition - further emphasized by Sir David McVicar's new production at the Lyric Opera - it is prominent in its search to question the meaning of it all. So, whether or not philosophizing about the inherent nature of man gets you up and out in the morning, a visit to the Civic Opera House would very much be in order for a beguiling production that, while leaving one starved for melody, makes for cracking drama and discussion.
