Alongside the opening of A Number, the theatre has announced three new productions at The Old Vic for 2022 – a topical world premiere, a modern classic and the return of a treasured favourite.

So many musicals wish they were as cool, progressive, provocative as Spring Awakening still is since its premiere Off-Broadway in 2006. More than 15 years later and a bunch of awards garnered across the world, it’s still as fresh and stunning in Rupert Goold’s monumental production at the Almeida. Based on a 19th Century banned German play and delicately exploring topics like sex, homosexuality, abortion, and rape in a disapproving, hyper-conservative community, Steven Sater (book and lyrics) and Duncan Sheik’s (music) rock musical has become an evergreen show that society as it is won't be able to surmount thematically.

Michael Longhurst, Artistic Director, and Henny Finch, Executive Director of the Donmar Warehouse, today announce two Resident Assistant Directors (RADs): Dadiow Lin, who takes up the role from 20 December, and Josh Parr who joins the company this week. Five performances of Yaël Farber's production will be streamed between Wednesday 27– Saturday 30 October, with the actors performing live from the theatre each night. The film will be produced by North South Culture following their work on the acclaimed live stream run of Hymn in February.

Lynne Meadow (Artistic Director) and Barry Grove (Executive Producer) have announced that Manhattan Theatre Club will present its 2021 Spring Gala, “NYC MTC: A Virtual Gala for Manhattan Theatre Club,” on Thursday, June 10 at 7:00pm ET. As BroadwayWorld previously reported, James Graham is collaborating with music legend Elton John and Jake Shears of The Scissor Sisters on a musical take on the life of infamous TV evangelist, Tammy Faye Bakker.

It is refreshing to see the Almeida come back with something a little different: a play with songs about loss and connection. Co-created by Chris Bush, Rebecca Frecknall, and the six-strong cast, Nine Lessons and Carols is far from your cosy festive treat, instead opting to address situations with black comedy and an air of gloom.
