Houston Grand Opera presents World Premiere Of THE HOUSE WITHOUT A CHRISTMAS TREE
by A.A. Cristi
- Nov 8, 2017
Houston Grand Opera (HGO) continues its series of holiday operas with the world premiere presentation of The House without a Christmas Tree by the widely admired composer/librettist team of Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek, in the HGO Resilience Theater at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The opera is based on the uplifting story by Gail Rock and the beloved 1972 television film of the same name about a family that is healed by the holiday spirit. A precocious daughter struggles to understand her father's resentment of the holidays and longs for a beautiful Christmas tree like other families have, to make her house look happy. The opera includes a new setting of the carol Gather Around the Christmas Tree, sung by a juvenile chorus. Tickets for the new venue are available at HGO.org. Group discounts are available. Parking for HGO's performances will be available at the Avenida North garage located at 1815 Rusk Street, across from HGO's new venue. A sky bridge connects the parking garage to the GRB, and there is clear signage directing patrons to the theater. More information about parking can be found here.

On August 25, I walked into Houston Grand Opera just like I would any other Friday morning. I parked underneath the Wortham Theater Center, rode the escalator up through the Grand Foyer, and hitched an elevator to my office backstage on the 6th floor. Within the next 72 hours, much of the route I took would be submerged underneath 14 feet of water from Hurricane Harvey-and the days and weeks that have since followed have been anything but ordinary.

Houston Grand Opera to Create New Theater in the George R. Brown Convention Center
by A.A. Cristi
- Sep 25, 2017
Houston Grand Opera (HGO) will transform an exhibit hall in Houston's downtown convention center into an intimate theater for unconventional opera. The first three operas of the company's 2017 18 season will now take place at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston, due to the closing of the Wortham Theater Center for repairs. The three operas to be presented in Exhibit Hall A3 of the convention center, to be called the HGO Resilience Theater, include the season opener, Verdi's La traviata (Oct. 20 Nov. 11); Handel's Julius Caesar (Oct. 27 Nov. 10); and the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek's The House without a Christmas Tree (Nov. 30 Dec. 17). The HGO Resilience Theater will hold approximately 1,700 seats with a combination of stadium and floor seating, including excellent wheelchair accessibility. Every seat will be less than 100 feet from the stage. The space will also give audiences more insight into and connection to the theatrical process.
