A layered stage and stellar cast bring dimension to Soulpepper's production of MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM. Directed by Mumbi Tindyebwa Otu, this adaptation of August Wilson's 1982 play follows an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago where the music takes a back seat to discussions of race and human rights.

BWW Review: ANIMAL FARM at Soulpepper Uses Humour to Reel You In
by Taylor Long - Mar 20, 2018

I would watch a Ravi Jain directed production of the phone book. ANIMAL FARM, presented by Soulpepper, is an adaption of George Orwell's famous novel by Canadian playwright Anthony MacMahon. Jain and MacMahon design a campy, satirical world for the farm animals, using humour as a reel to hook the audience into deeper discussions about humanity and society. It's persuasive, troubling, and honestly funny.

BWW Reviews: Tarragon's SOLICITING TEMPTATION
by Toronto Newsdesk - Apr 16, 2014

Sex can be a touchy subject, something many people have trouble talking about. The topic can get messier when discussing sex as a profession and, more so, the murky industry of sex tourism in which privileged westerners exploit the egregiously disadvantaged youth of the third world. This is the subject of Soliciting Temptation, the newest play by Governor General's Award winner Erin Shields, a two-hander now having its world premiere at Tarragon Extra Space.

BWW Reviews: THE GIGLI CONCERT Makes Sweet Music in Toronto
by Catherine Kustanczy - Apr 7, 2014

'The singer is the voice of the subconscious self.' So utters the main character in Tom Murphy's famous play, The Gigli Concert, now on at Toronto's Young Centre for the Performing Arts through May 14th. Produced by Soulpepper Theatre Company, the line is key to understanding this epic yet intimate play. Though occasionally challenging, Nancy Palk's production is an ultimately rewarding evening of theater for what it reveals of the human capacities for healing and connection.
