If you love Steel Magnolias as much as I do, you always wait with bated breath to see if the actresses in the production can pull off the believability of long-term bonds of friendship. At the opening night of director Aaron Washington's production at Carrollwood Players Theatre, as soon as the cast of six was on stage together, it was easy to see the real, comfortable rapport.

Although I admire any new theatre company that wants to do edgy, provocative work, this was not my favorite show.

New theatre company, PJMA Theater Productions debuts its inaugural season with the provocative musical Bare: A Pop Opera on September 7 through 22, hosted at Carrollwood Players Theatre. The theater company plans to finish the season in 2019 with Carrie The Musical and another musical, to be selected. Ryan Roberge, theater founder and director said, 'PJMA is proud to represent a diverse group of people with innovative works. We are a semi-professional theater company that is creating theatre performances that not only entertain but inspire and challenge our audience.'

Imagine 'Hamilton' as a juke box musical. It's a mess at times, but it's an entertaining mess with an abundance of heart and talent.

Coming to The CWP Black Box on June 29-July 1 is Pop Goes America. Inspired by listening to Lou Vega's Mambo #5, local playwright Jim Russell decided to pen historic tales using the melodies of recognized pop music over a short duration of 3 days. From that inspiration came 24 original songs with dances choreographed by director Drew Eberhard that will take you from the 1800s to modern times over a period of two hours.

Sexy. Stunning. Evocative. Imaginative. Electrifying. People will be talking about the show, the set, the Victorian-steampunk costumes, the makeup, the props, the lighting, the live sound effects and of course, the gorgeous cast with the stunning voices long after director Derek Baxter's vision of a completely immersive production of JEKYLL & HYDE is nothing but a folded poster in the costume closet.

Opening at Carrollwood Players Theatre on February 23, Director Derek Baxter has given the musical Jekyll & Hyde a makeover. He is confident that it will be something the audience has not experienced before.

It's a fast-paced show, full of life, that is so enjoyable that we forgive any messiness or performance moments that are not up to snuff.
