The last time the Met did Puccini's LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST--GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST--it was such a dispiriting affair that I was ready to write it off as past its expiration date. New York City Opera to the rescue!, opening its season with a lively revival of the Italian master's work about the California Gold Rush and the tough-babe-with-a-heart-of-marshmallow who runs the saloon.

New York City Opera's Season Opens with LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST

After a critically acclaimed 2016/2017 season, New York City Opera is again at the forefront of New York's cultural season, opening its 2017/2018 season on September 6, 2017 at 7:30PM with a new production of Puccini's La fanciulla del West directed by Ivan Stefanutti with James Meena conducting the New York City Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Soprano Kristin Sampson returns to City Opera to sing the role of Minnie, joined by tenor Jonathan Burton as Dick Johnson in his City Opera debut, and bass-baritone Kevin Short as Jack Rance.

Noted American conductor Jason Tramm makes his Italian 2017 Narnia Festival conducting debut with several scheduled performances - including two new, fully staged productions of "Gianni Schicchi" and "Suor Angelica" from Puccini's celebrated and enigmatic ensemble of one act operas, "IL TRITICO." Directing the productions Tramm will be working with Maria Rosaria Omaggi, the accomplished Italian actress and writer.

The beloved opera 'Madama Butterfly' by Giacomo Puccini will be presented in Israel in a new production originally created for the La Scala Opera House in Milan. The opera will be conducted by the musical director of the Israeli Opera Daniel Oren. The great Japanese director Keita Asari will present in this production a special take on the opera, influenced by the Japanese culture as opposed to this opera's many productions that offer a western look on the Japanese culture.
