BWW Review: EXTREMITIES - Also Known As Theatre
by David Tompkins - Mar 30, 2019

In 1982, Extremities, by playwright William Mastrosimone, premiered at Westside Arts in New York starring Susan Sarandon, and later the play was adapted into a movie starring Farrah Fawcett, the final actress to play the role of Marjorie in the Broadway production.

BWW Review: NOT MEDEA: Motherhood Gone Awry
by Nancy Grossman - Mar 20, 2019

Playwright Allison Gregory combines myth and magic to craft a non-linear narrative about betrayal, death, motherhood, and the darkest tragedy. It is to her credit that she weaves a great deal of humor and humanity through the play, and Juliet Bowler is adept at playing both sides of the character. Toga-clad Gene Dante is c*cksure in the dual roles of the mythological Jason (of Golden Fleece fame) and modern-day Jason, the woman's ex-husband who left her for a younger wife. Every Greek play must have its Chorus to contribute commentary, ably provided here in both spoken and sung verses by Cassandra Meyer. Elizabeth Yvette Ramirez directs with a clear-eyed vision of both the real world and allegorical components of the play, and elicits strong performances from her tight-knit ensemble.

BWW Review: THE REAL INSPECTOR HOUND Rings Down the Curtain on Bad Habit Productions
by Nancy Grossman - Mar 25, 2017

Bad Habit Productions is about to drop the final curtain after ten years of delivering award-winning theater, but they are not taking the easy way out. Director Dawn M. Simmons and an ensemble of eight actors make sense of Tom Stoppard's 1968 comedy whodunnit, THE REAL INSPECTOR HOUND, even as they squeeze very bit of theatrical nonsense from this old chestnut. The troupe plays well together and looks like they're taking their roles seriously, despite their characters saying and doing ridiculous things.

BWW Review: TALES OF A FOURTH GRADE LESBO: Don't Ask, Do Tell
by Nancy Grossman - Mar 16, 2016

Flat Earth Theatre opens their tenth anniversary season with the East Coast premier of Gina Young's cheeky exploration of growing up queer in the 90s. An ensemble cast of seven women and four men portray girls and boys of varying ages and personality types, but you will recognize all of these kids and may see yourself among them. Through a series of vignettes, dances, and songs, Young captures the awkwardness and anxiety of sexual awakening and feeling "different," but would get more bang for the buck with some judicious editing.

BWW Review: Whistler in the Dark Fades Out With FAR AWAY

Whistler in the Dark Theatre is calling it a day, but not before staging one final play that will challenge their audience. Concluding their season celebrating Caryl Churchill, the Whistlers are fading out with the dystopian fable FAR AWAY.

Whistler in the Dark Theatre Continues Caryl Churchill Celebration with FAR AWAY, Running Now thru 4/19
by BWW News Desk - Apr 3, 2014

Whistler in the Dark Theatre continues their season-long celebration and exploration of acclaimed British playwright Caryl Churchill's work with a presentation of her 2000 dystopian fairy tale, FAR AWAY. Permeated with paranoia and fear, FAR AWAY shows us a fun-house mirror reflection of our world, a dystopian society where unspeakable horrors take place just offstage and the moral compass is shattered. By turns lyrical and prosaic, terrifying and shot through with a dark glinting humor, this fable of a society (and a planet) turning on itself is the work master playwright and political thinker at her best.
